Louisville basketball’s 2026-27 season is quickly approaching, and Cardinals fans have high expectations for this squad. Pat Kelsey made major changes, adding 11 players, including eight from the Transfer Portal, but the roster still isn’t finalized.

All the attention right now is on the Cardinals' projected starting shooting guard, Seth Trimble. The UNC transfer is seeking a fifth year of eligibility after four years with the Tar Heels. However, Trimble is heavily involved in the Wells vs. NCAA lawsuit, in which the athletes, including Trimble, are trying to secure that additional season of eligibility under the NCAA’s five-for-five rule.
Just yesterday, Kelsey made his presence felt at the Kentucky Court of Appeals panel, calling out the NCAA and its lawyer, and sending a strong message why Trimble should be eligible.
Pat Kelsey sent a passionate message about why Seth Trimble deserves another year
Kelsey is a passionate, energetic coach, and he showed that in court yesterday. For those who don’t know much about Kelsey, he will go to war for his players, and he showed that in court yesterday.
“Look, you are trying to turn questions. Tell me the rules, and I’ll follow them. Tell me the rules, and I’ll follow them,” Kelsey stated passionately. “Nobody follows them. And then every time something happens, a lawsuit happens, so nobody knows. And you’re saying well, did you know this rule here, and who made it? You are trying to trick me with a bunch of stuff. End the chaos. End the chaos.”
“We recruited professionals in the G League because you couldn’t enforce your rule. You couldn’t do it. Now, all of a sudden, the fifth year starts happening. This is our rule. Follow this. Be a good soldier; follow it. You can’t enforce it. So, you are telling me, did you know this? Did they say this at this time? Doesn’t matter. Just get rid of all of this. Care about the kids. Care about these guys. They are great dudes. They deserve the extra year. All the other guys got the extra year. Give it to him. What are we doing? Why are you fighting it?”

Kelsey is calling out the NCAA, and this whole thing is getting support from Louisville and college basketball fans across the country. One Kentucky fan even responded to the viral video of Kelsey’s response, saying, “Every single coach in the nation should be doing this.”
Trimble is, of course, a major piece of Louisville’s roster, and Cards fans want him to play next season, but Kelsey’s fiery message is exactly what someone needed to say. This whole process has truly been chaos and a headache for everyone, and you have to feel bad for Trimble and any athlete who is fighting this battle.
Louisville faces Kansas next Wednesday, October 21, in its first preseason game, yet we still don’t know who will play for UofL. If Kelsey, Trimble, and UofL win this battle, it would be a massive boost to Louisville’s roster, as the UNC transfer is a physical guard and an elite defender in college basketball.
He is exactly what the Cardinals missed in last year’s backcourt, but now Trimble and Louisville will have to wait and see what happens.
