Pat Kelsey's recruiting magic could actually impact Mark Pope getting shown the door

Louisville basketball is red-hot right now, and Pat Kelsey is making history with his ability to recruit. The Cardinals recently landed a 5-star recruit in the 2027 recruiting class, Obinna Ekezie Jr., who ranks as high as No. 2 in the 2027 cycle and No. 1 among centers.

He is now the highest-rated commitment in program history, and the Cardinals fans can’t help but look at Kentucky and laugh. When Kentucky hired Mark Pope and Louisville hired Kelsey, many Wildcat fans hoped Pope would be doing what Kelsey was doing. However, the Wildcats are struggling, to say the least, this offseason, and CBS Sports is raising eyebrows, going so far as to say Pope is on the hot seat entering the 2026-27 season.

Louisville's dominant recruting surge as CBS reporter calling Mark Pope's seat hot

In a recent article, David Cobb wrote about how Louisville is “thriving,” and Kentucky is struggling, and he believes Pope’s seat is getting a bit warmer as the season comes with his latest whiff.

“As Pope struggles to field a roster capable of competing at the highest levels of the SEC, let alone all of college basketball, Kentucky's angst is only exacerbated by the improvement of those in its neighborhood. Perhaps Pope's clunky offseason would be more tolerable if its rivals and neighbors weren't tearing it up.” Stated Cobb in a recent article. “Barring the completion of a couple late-cycle Hail Marys, Pope will enter his third season on a scalding seat.”

Louisville and Tennessee have taken over this offseason, with the Cardinals ranking No. 1 and Tennessee ranking No. 2, and while Kentucky’s 13th ranking isn’t terrible, they don’t have a decent return class that gives the fans any hope at the moment, and they have one 4-star commitment in the 2026 class, ranking them No. 62 in the nation.

Kelsey has dominated this offseason, landing one 5-star from the portal, and most recently, the 5-star center in the 2027 class over Kentucky. Both Louisville and Kentucky were in Ekezie’s final five, but ultimately he chose Louisville because “it (Louisville) has everything I need in terms of winning and development.”

Kelsey, on top of Bidunga and Ekezie, has also landed 4-star point guard Jackson Shelstad, 4-star small forward Karter Knox, 4-star power forward Alvaro Folgueiras, 4-star shooting guard De'Shayne Montgomery, and 3-star center Gabe Dynes. The Cards landed Dynes and Montgomery, as Pope was actively involved in both transfers, but, like Ekezie, they picked Louisville over Kentucky.
