Louisville basketball fans knew the Cardinals would see some players enter the Transfer Portal, and Pat Kelsey and Louisville just learned who the first one will be.

Louisville Basketball: The Cardinals’ biggest 2026 Transfer Portal needs

Moments ago, Draft Express' Jonathan Givony reported that former 4-star commit from Germany, Sananda Fru, will move on from Louisville and will say goodbye to the Cardinals. Fru committed to Louisville with high expectations as a 4-star from the international stage, but playing for the Cardinals for just one season certainly has left Louisville fans underwhelmed.

Louisville fans had incredibly high expectations for Fru, who committed to the Cardinals after winning the Basketball Bundesliga's Best German Young Player award, after averaging 12.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 1.6 blocks per game while shooting 66.8% from the field. After he won that award, he was placed in an elite category alongside NBA players like Dennis Schröder, Franz Wagner, and Daniel Theis.

However, Fru’s lone year with Louisville wasn’t how many expected it to go, as he averaged 9.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and 1.2 assists per game while shooting 75.3 percent from the field. The 6-foot-11, 250-pound forward started the first 29 games, but with Fru lacking physicality in the paint, especially against top-tier teams, Kelsey decided to start Vangelis Zougris over the former 4-star commit for the final two regular-season games and the postseason.

Fru, entering the Transfer Portal, confirms that Kelsey will have to attack the frontcourt even more this offseason. Louisville’s glaring weakness was its physicality and its frontcourt, and with Fru now gone, Kelsey will have a lot of work to do to get this team back to Final Four dreams.

The Cardinals will now keep a close eye on other returning players, as Adrian Wooley is reportedly expected to earn big-time offers, and Khani Rooths is another former 4-star who Louisville fans are concerned they could lose this offseason.
