The Louisville football team has lost two straight games. They have fallen out of the College Football Playoff picture and it would take a miracle for them to get back in. Still, stranger things have happened. This season has an eerily similar feeling to the craziest college football season ever.
2007 was the pinnacle of crazy football. Top-ranked teams were losing every week. Ohio State lost in the second-to-last week of the season, moved from one to seven in the polls, and still ended up playing for a national championship. That's how wild things got.
Things are similar this season. Last week, five of the top eleven teams in the country lost. Teams just don't seem like they want to stay at the top of the polls. That makes this week's CFP table a lot different than what it was last week.
Seed | Team | Reason they are here | Previous Rank |
---|---|---|---|
1. | Texas | SEC Champion | 1 |
2. | Ohio State | Big Ten Champion | 2 |
3. | BYU | Big 12 Champion | N/A |
4. | Miami | ACC Champion | 4 |
5. | Oregon | At-Large | 7 |
6. | Penn State | At-Large | 8 |
7. | Georgia | At-Large | 9 |
8. | Notre Dame | At-Large | 10 |
9. | Iowa State | At-Large | N/A |
10. | Alabama | At-Large | 5 |
11. | Clemson | At-Large | N/A |
12 | Liberty | Conference USA Champion | 12 |
The Big 12 is a giant mess. No one wants to step up and win the conference. Both BYU and Iowa State have light schedules the rest of the way, but I think BYU is slightly better. Both of them are still undefeated. For now, BYU gets the automatic berth, but the Cyclones are circling.
It's clear the ACC wants Miami to win the conference. It's the only possible explanation for the horrendous officiating in their last two games. While I don't think Clemson is very good, someone has to be the second-best team in the conference. It's surely not the Louisville Cardinals.
Michigan and USC fall out after proving their big frauds. The Big Ten will have another shakeup in the rankings next week depending on what happens in the Ohio State/Oregon game this week. They both will likely stay in the CFP discussion no matter which team wins.
