A two-sport coach, Laurie Apitz fell well short of success with both the football and basketball programs at Louisville. However, his performance with the Cardinals men’s basketball team was simply dreadful.

Winning just 16.1 percent of his games, Apitz led his team to an average of 2.5 wins per season – 10 wins over four years with the program.

Over the same stretch, the Cardinals lost a shocking 52 games – an average of 13 games per season.

Bringing Apitz on to lead both sports was clearly too much for the coach to handle and was a mistake by the Lousiville athletic department. While it was the mid-30s when Apitz was hired and this was a more common practice, they should have found someone else to fill the role for the basketball team.

Sitting at 10-52 overall, Apitz is the worst men’s basketball head coaching hire in Lousiville program history.
