Louisville football team shows they still have work to do to be a contender

The Louisville football team had a chance to announce themselves as a true CFP contender. Their performance against Notre Dame shows they're not there yet.

The Louisville football team looked like a team that could make the College Football Playoff at times on Saturday against Notre Dame. That was certainly the case after the opening drive when they went. out and scored a touchdown. They looked like they could control Notre Dame.

Unfortunately, stupid mistakes derailed them. They ended up losing 31-24 to the Irish because of three truly awful turnovers. The talent wasn't the issue. Louisville is as talented and perhaps even more talented than Notre Dame. The stupid, unforced mistakes were the difference.

Until Louisville can fix those issues, the Cardinals are going to continue to falter against the best teams that they face. They have to figure out how to not shoot themselves in the foot. The defense has problems to fix as well. No unit was more of a disaster than the special teams though.

The Louisville football team needs to clean up mistakes before they can be considered a contender

Fumbling twice on the same kickoff put the Louisville Cardinals in awful field position. They ended up having to punt because of that. A horrible snap on another punt that went over the punter's head led to a touchdown from Notre Dame. Quite frankly, that one play was the difference in this game.

Things don't get any easier for the Cardinals. They still have to take on Miami and Clemson this season. They have to win both of those games to make sure they get a berth in the ACC Championship Game and also keep their at-large bid chances alive.

Louisville out-gained the Irish 437 to 283. Those three dumb turnovers were the reason why they didn't leave South Bend with a win. Those are correctable. This isn't a talent problem. It's a coaching issue and getting players to hold onto the ball issue.
