The Transfer Portal officially opens on April 7 and will be open for just two weeks, closing on April 21. Louisville basketball learned late last night that the Cardinals will lose at least two key players to the Transfer Portal, as Sananda Fru and Khani Rooths are likely to exit the program and enter the portal.

Louisville basketball fans crushed after losing 4-star fan favorite to Transfer Portal

The Cardinals fans had a gut feeling this offseason might be a bit different from last year, but Rooths' entering the transfer portal revealed the glaring truth about what they can expect. Louisville is likely to lose a few more players this offseason, and Pat Kelsey will have to essentially start from scratch and rebuild this entire roster, much like in the 2024 offseason.

Louisville basketball will have a full roster turnover

While the Cardinals' 2025-26 season didn’t go as many had hoped and predicted, there were still a few names every fan circled, hoping they could bring them back. Rooths was one of them.

He emerged as a fan-favorite who many thought could take a big leap this offseason and be Kelsey’s starting small forward or power forward, as he is a former 4-star recruit who ranked as high as No. 33 in the 2024 recruiting class. Rooths entering the portal hurts, but it reveals the glaring truth: Kelsey will have to start from scratch.

The Cards have zero commitment from the 2026 class. Yes, zero. And now, before the portal has even opened, it sounds like Louisville will have to replace its entire starting lineup and its top four bench pieces from this past season. The Cardinals will lose Ryan Conwell, Isaac McKneely, J’Vonne Hadley, Kobe Rodgers, and Aly Khalifa due to eligibility, will likely lose Mikel Brown Jr. to the NBA Draft, and have already lost Fru and Rooths to the portal, and Adrian Wooley is likely up next on the chopping block.

That means the Cardinals are losing their top nine rotational players from last season, their top nine scorers, and leaving Louisville and Kelsey with just Mouhamed Camara, London Johnson, Vangelis Zougris, Will Hanke, and Kasean Pryor, who will likely not be back as well.

So, the Cardinals fans are expecting a full roster turnover. It worked for Kelsey the first time and got him some underrated gems. Hopefully, he has more NIL money to work with and can do it again, but with Kelsey losing two assistant coaches this offseason, a completely new roster, and coming off an underwhelming second year with Final Four expectations, this is quickly becoming a crucial third season for the Cardinals' head coach.
