Louisville Recruiting: Courtney Ramey’s Recruitment Takes Another Odd Turn

Louisville Head Coach Chris Mack surprised everyone when it was reported he would be visiting with Courtney Ramey just a few days after saying the school no longer was recruiting the former commit.

On Monday I wrote about new Louisville basketball Head Coach Chris Mack and the reports that he was going to be traveling to St. Louis to meet with four star guard, and former Louisville commit Courtney Ramey.

The recruiting with Ramey has been wild over the last several months after he decommited from the Cards back in September, just a few hours after then coach Rick Pitino was fired. Throughout the time that David Padgett was in place as the Interim Coach, he kept in touch with Courtney and his father Terrell Ramey in hopes of potentially securing another commitment down the road.

When Mack took over, reports mentioned that he had reached out to several big time recruits, both in the 2018 class (i.e, Romeo Langford) and in the 2019 class. However, no one mentioned anything about Courtney Ramey, the longtime Louisville commit.

Even with that being the case, Courtney Ramey listed Louisville in his “final ten” schools on Instagram, insinuating that maybe the relationship between the school wasn’t dead.

But right when you thought you had things figured out, Chris Mack and Dino Guadio both talked about recruiting during their press conferences, saying that the school was no longer recruiting Ramey, even mentioning him by name.

"“As you look at our team Coach Pitino had Anfernee Simons and Courtney Ramey coming to Louisville.. We aren’t recruiting those guys so I can use their names, they were coming here, and they were going to help on the perimeter. What an opportunity for a 5th year transfer to come in and play in the back court, same thing with the 2019 class.”"

As is the case with a lot of recruits and their recruitment, things often get weird. On Monday several news outlets reported that the four star guard out of Webster Groves would be visiting with the Louisville basketball coaching staff in an in-home visit on April 18th. Consequently that’s today.. And as of this afternoon we now officially have word that-that visit did not take place.

Terrell Ramey took to Twitter this afternoon to announce that the visit between the Ramey family and Coach Mack was cancelled due to a scheduling conflict, and that the two parties were looking to reschedule.

This could simply be a misunderstanding in schedules, and the Ramey family truly did not know that the Iverson game would conflict with the meeting scheduled to take place with the Cardinal coaching staff.

Or, this was a meticulous and predetermined move. As mentioned before, several people around the recruitment of Ramey seemed to believe they Terrell Ramey was upset when Coach Mack reached out to Romeo Langford and several other big-time recruits, but not Courtney.

I could be diving way to deep into this, or I could be hitting the nail on the head. There’s really no way to tell.

It’s likely a good thing that the Ramey family is taking a slower approach to their recruiting as it gives the Louisville basketball staff more time to develop and cultivate a relationship. However, on the same hand, this could be bad for the Cards. They could lose out on multiple players if they were to wait around for a commitment from Ramey.

One thing is for certain, this recruitment process between Courtney Ramey and Louisville has been more up and down than anyone could have imagined.

Hopefully it will work out for both parties in the end.

Courtney Ramey is a four star guard, ranked 40th in the nation and the 11th best point guard according to Rivals. He has recently visited with Missouri and Texas, as well as Oklahoma State.
