Louisville has had great success recruiting at the quarterback position in the Bobby Petrino era. That will continue in the 2019 with Jaden Johnson.

Next: Louisville Recruiting Outlook: Defense

The 2019 high school football recruiting class has been characterized by it’s lack of depth and star power at the quarterback position. While there is plenty of talented high school seniors looking for the right college to attend, the number of impact QB’s is down compared to recent years.

In the 2018 class, there were a total of 21 quarterbacks (dual threat & pro) in the Rivals top 250 rankings, two of which were ranked the number one and two players in the entire class. In 2019, there are just 13 total quarterbacks in the top 250. Needless to say, grabbing the QB of the future is a top priority for QB needy schools.

Programs all over the country have done everything they can to get out in front of others, trying to build relationships at fast pace and get their commitment before they miss their chance and end up quarterback-less.

Even though UofL has had numerous QB commitments over the last several years including former four star and blue chip prospect Puma Pass (2016), dual threat Malik Cunningham (2017), and three star Florida prospect Jordan Travis (2017). that hasn’t stopped Bobby Petrino from pursuing his next “QB of the future.”

With the recent success and development of Lamar Jackson on his side, Petrino landed his next quarterback for the Louisville football program in three star prospect Jaden Johnson back in November.

Though he currently sits just outside of the Rivals 250, Johnson has developed into a highly sought after prospect in the class of 2019. The three star prospect out of Kirby High School in Memphis, TN stands at 6’3, 210 pounds and has risen up the recruiting rankings, and will continue to do so due to his strong arm and accuracy, high football IQ, and his ability to make plays outside of the pocket.

After a big junior season in which averaged 200+ yards per game of total offense and accounted for 19 touchdowns, Johnson chose the Louisville football program over his hometown Memphis Tigers, who have had success developing QB’s as of late, and big time SEC program Georgia.

“What made me commit was the atmosphere (and) the coaching staff,” Johnson told the Commercial Appeal after he committed to Louisville. “The fans, really just the whole atmosphere. They really treat you like family. The tailgating was fun; they really make good bar-b-que.”

While Johnson has all the potential in the world to grow into the next great Louisville QB following behind names like Brian Brohm, Stefon LeFors, Chris Redman, Teddy Bidgewater, and Lamar Jackson, it’s what he’s done off the field this summer that’s caught the eyes of fans and the Louisville coaching staff alike.

In a day-in-age where high school player’s commitments mean as much as Drake’s allegiance to a winning sports team, Johnson has shown through action that his love for the Cards is real.

If you scroll through the QB’s Twitter account (@JadenJohnson524), you’ll quickly see he’s become Louisville’s biggest recruiter, retweeting players left and right, and even tagging them to get the UofL fan base involved in showing love. While the coaches aren’t able to attend camps and communicate directly through Twitter or social media with potential recruits, they at least know they can count on Johnson to be the champion of the 2019 recruiting class.

With only two commitments in the fold for the 2019 class, the Cardinal coaching staff still has plenty of work to do through the summer and into the fall. Coming off two straight top 25 classes, the recruiting bar has been set high and fans won’t accept anything less than a top 20 class, meaning the pressure is on the staff to produce.

But while other programs are out worrying about how many quarterbacks are remaining on their recruiting board and who they might land, Bobby Petrino and the Louisville football staff can sleep easy knowing they are way ahead of the curve when it comes to landing their guy. With the focus now on other positions of need, Jaden Johnson and the staff can go out and send the message #Uncaged19.
