One-On-One With Louisville Football QB of the Future Jaden Johnson

Louisville’s most outspoken commit, and possible quarterback of the future spoke with BRL on the state of the program.

UofL has had a pretty solid string of quarterbacks come through in the last couple of decades. From Chris Redman, to Ragone, to Lefors, to Brohm, Bridgewater, Lamar Jackson, and now Puma Pass.

The next big-time player in a long line of great QB’s could also be one of Louisville’s best recruiting tools. Jaden Johnson is out of Kirby High School in Memphis, TN, and we wrote last month about how he is preaching the Cardinal gospel.

In a modern recruiting world where most players are worried about themselves, Johnson is more concerned about building a solid team around him. A quick glance at his Twitter page, and you can see JJ retweeting, shouting out, and encouraging others to check out potential Louisville recruits. Johnson has been all about the program since he committed in November of 2017.

Johnson is a big-time snag for the Cards. He is similarly under the radar to many of the past QB recruits. 247 rates him as a 3-star recruit, and the number 15 QB in his class, which means he has potential to be a big-time starter at the next level. But judging by his leadership skills on and off the field, Johnson is going to be a fan favorite, and a likeable guy to play with from day one.

Big Red Louie talked to Johnson, and this is what he had to say about his progress, and the future of the program:

Big Red Louie: What was the biggest reason you chose Louisville?

Jaden Johnson: The reason I chose Louisville was because of the campus. It felt welcoming. I really like being there, and seeing the way Coach Petrino runs his offense, which is an NFL style offense, it prepares you for that level.

BRL: What are the coaches saying about your potential as a Cardinal and being the QB of the future at Louisville?

JJ: They say that I have great potential, and that I am a very great kid who is willing to learn and listen to instructions, and that I want to get better every time.

BRL: How is recruiting going with other players? Are they buying in to what Louisville has to offer?

JJ: Recruiting is going very well. I have a lot of guys buying in to what I’m saying. We should have some commits starting to pick it up soon, mostly during the summer and (into) August.

BRL: What are you most excited about when you get on campus?

JJ: Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium is what I’m excited about, because the fans are great.

BRL: Besides Lamar Jackson, who would you say is your favorite current or former Cardinal?

JJ: Johnny Unitas.

BRL: What do you think you need to work on this season this season, and have the coaches given you anything to work on?

JJ: I feel like I’ve prepared myself very well, but what I feel like I need to work on is just executing the game plan that my (high school) coach has for me. I’ve done everything else I just have to go out, execute everything and have fun.

BRL: What do you think about this year’s team, and do you think Puma can fill the void Lamar left?

JJ: Puma is my guy. He has a lot of shoes to fill, but he won’t shy away from the pressure at all. He will step up in big moments, and have those big, explosive plays just like Lamar did. Puma will do great this year.

Johnson has a maturity about him that will help him, and his team, succeed at the next level. He not only has what coach Bobby Petrino and staff want as far as capability of executing the offense, but brings the leadership and poise that is necessary for a championship caliber team.
