Louisville basketball extended a scholarship this weekend to rising big man, Kadin Shedrick.

With the college basketball season just a few months away, gears have begun to shift toward practices and preparing for everlasting that comes with a new year. However, that hasn’t stopped Chris Mack and the Louisville basketball staff from staying on top of recruiting.

As we’ve talked about several times over the last month or so, players are beginning to cut their lists on their potential schools, planning visits and even making a final decision on their future. But schools are still offering new prospects in hopes of getting in before decisions are made.

That’s exactly what happened this weekend when Louisville basketball Head Coach Chris Mack extended an offer to three star big man, Kadin Shedrick, from Holly Springs, North Carolina according to recruiting expert Jake Weingarten .

Coming into the month of July, little was known about the 6’10” 200 pound power forward/center. But after a strong evaluation period playing on the Adidas AAU circuit with Garner Road, the big man finally got the attention he deserved and the offers came flooding in. The list of new schools were long and powerful, including ACC foe Virginia, Indiana, Florida, UConn, Georgetown and several others.

It’s not hard to see why Shedrick has big time power five coaches salivating over his potential. Saying Shedrick is “slight” in build would be a bit of an understatement, as one of the biggest priorities for coaches will be adding some muscle to his lean frame. But his ability to play on multiple levels on the offensive side of the ball, showing post moves beyond his time as well as the knack to step out and knock down deep shots on the pick and pop should make him a productive player at the next level.

Shedrick also runs the floor extremely well, using those pencil like legs to outrun opposing big men. He’s also got great athleticism, the ability to guard multiple positions as well as block shots at an elite level. His game is still growing, and he’ll need to live in the weight room, but any team pursuing Shedrick would be getting a solid addition to their 2019 haul if he were to commit.

For Louisville, a team already pursuing several big men including Aidan Igiehon, Qudus Wahab, Omar Payne, Jason Jitoboh, Orlando Robinson, and several others, Shedrick’s offer might offer some concern in regards to positioning with those player. However, it shouldn’t.

One of the best things a coach and recruiter can do is explore all options. Just because you’re actively pursuing another player, there’s not any reason to stop looking. Until a commitment comes the coaches and staff must continue to do their due diligence on each prospect, as recruiting offers a variety of twists and turns.

I believe the Cards are currently in a great place to land Ighieon, but with Steven Enoch being a senior in 2019-20, and Akoy Agau finally exhausting all of his 19 years of eligibility, Mack and his staff must land two, if not three big men in 2019.

Even with Louisville chasing after some bigger names in the class of 2019, keeping an eye on a rising big man like Shedrick will likely be in the Cards for the UofL coaching staff over the coming weeks and months.
