Louisville baseball sophomore Reid Detmers is primed for a break-out season in the middle of a star-studded rotation for the Cardinal Nine.

Sophomore LHP Reid Detmers will be one to watch for Louisville baseball in 2019. The Cardinals have plenty of outstanding pitching this season, and Detmers is a key part of that mix.

The 19-year-old from Springfield, Illinois has already done damage this year, and was the first Cardinal to get an ACC weekly honor after being named ACC Pitcher of the Week on Monday. This honor came after a near no-hitter for the Cardinals Friday against Brown.

In his second start of the season, Detmers pitched seven innings, handed out a career-high 11 strikeouts, and left the Bears hitless while only allowing one walk.

“I just think I spot up really well, pitching in and out, up and down. They can see off speed, so pitching in and out is really effective,” Detmers said after the game.

Whatever it is that Detmers is doing, he’s doing it right and he needs to keep it up.

In his first start of the season in Louisville’s 3-2 loss against UConn, he only gave up one run on four hits & three walks in his five innings pitched.

Detmers has a .75 ERA & .67 WHIP this season thus far. Though ending his first season with the Cardinals with a 4.85 ERA, he did some damage and ended the 2018 season with a 4-2 record. Detmers had 69 strikeouts in 2018, with his career-high 10 strikeouts coming in a Louisville 8-4 win over Wright State on May 8.

In his freshman year, he made 18 appearances, with eight of those being starts. With the way his second year with the Cardinals has started, let’s hope we can see him on the mound much more than that.

In his collegiate debut against George Mason Feb. 18, 2018, Detmers pitched 3 relief innings registering seven strikeouts and only allowing one run. This start for the Card was a good way to lay the foundation to what’s to come in the future for the sophomore.

On March 4, 2018, against Western Carolina, the Cardinal pitched three scoreless innings in relief and with seven strikeouts. He earned his first collegiate win.

In the ACC Championship Coach Dan McDonnell put the ball in Detmers’ hand. The freshman came out with the W after striking out five and only allowing one run on four hits in his 5.2 innings pitched.

Detmers is still young with only a 5-2 record for his career, but he brings promising pitching to an exceptional Cardinal team.

If the sophomore is stepping on the mound for a game, it’ll be a game to tune into.
