Louisville football recruiting providing new hope in the future to Cardnation
June 14th
Louisville Ballard safety and rising star Josh Minkins Jr. announces his commitment to the Cards.
One of the biggest priorities for Scott Satterfield and the new Louisville football staff is winning recruits locally. After seeing so many talented kids leave the state, or go a little further east, the staff is hungry to land some of the premier talent that is coming out of the city of Louisville.
That’s what made the commitment of Josh Minkins Jr. the biggest of the 2020 class. The Cards added a legacy recruit on Friday when Josh Minkins Jr. pledged to Scott Satterfield and company.
The three-star safety has been one of the nation’s biggest risers this summer, due to winning MVP Honors at Nike’s “The Opening” camp in Nashville, and receiving offers from Louisville amongst a variety of other Power Five schools.
Alex Stengel wrote about Minkins commitment for Big Red Louie saying,
"It’s easy to see the upside for Minkins on the defensive side, as he shows great vision playing safety – following the QB and making quick decisions that allow him to impact every play. His length allows him to really challenge wide receivers for every type of throw, positioning himself for potential interceptions."
I love that Louisville is truly making an effort to keep Louisville kids in the city, one of Satterfield’s first promises he made when initially hired. Everyone should be excited about the local effort, and the overall recruiting momentum in general for the program.
Minkins is a rising safety who said he has “been waiting for a Louisville offer (his) whole life.”
Speedy athlete Dexter Rentz Jr. commits to Louisville.
Looking for the next Tutu Atwell type of player for the Cards? That’s exactly what they got in Dexter Rentz Jr. on Friday, after the three-star “athlete,” who will play slot receiver for the Cards.
Rentz is confident that he’ll be able to transition into a full-time role at wide receiver at the collegiate level, telling the Orlando Sentinel,
"“Most colleges offer me as an athlete, but my big offers, like SEC and ACC, they see me as a wide receiver. I like to score the ball, so anything on offense like playing wide receiver, I love that position."
He’s a dynamic playmaker with a lot of speed, who will give Scott Satterfield a unique weapon who can do a lot of things. He’s played wide receiver and wildcat quarterback for Ocoee High School, and he’ll use his 4.5 speed to score for the Cards.
As Jacob Lane mentioned in his article, Louisville has had seemingly endless amounts of depth at the WR position the last few seasons, but after this season in which they’ll lose Seth Dawkins, Devante Peete, Emonee Spence, and graduate transfer Thomas Jackson, things will start to thin out, providing a need for Rentz.
