Louisville football: 3 final thoughts from Cards upset win over Wake Forest
Coaching is king
If you’ve followed Louisville sports for your entire life or just over the past three seasons, you’ve seen just how important coaching is.
When the basketball program went from a Hall of Fame coach in Rick Pitino to someone who had never coached a game in David Padgett, Louisville went from a two seed in the NCAA tournament to a two seed in the NIT. When Chris Mack showed up, the Cardinals were immediately back in the big dance.
Last year, you watched a coach that was very successful at Louisville at times, Bobby Petrino, go down in flames and get fired midseason. Louisville won two football games in twelve attempts in 2018, leaving fans concerned about where the program was headed.
Scott Satterfield was the perfect response. Since the day he came to Louisville from Appalachian State, he has preached positivity and accountability – and this team plays like it. It’s crazy to think about, but coach Satterfield just won his second game at Louisville against a ranked opponent.
That’s more than Bobby Petrino did in 5 years. I think it starts with the way Satterfield treats his players, could you imagine Bobby doing something like this.
One of the best Louisville play calls of all time came on a 4th & one at the Wake Forest 41 late in the game. Louisville was up three, with an option to punt, giving Wake a greater distance to travel, but their offense was smoking hot. So Satterfield elected to go for it, he used as money of a play as you will see in college football, one he’s used before.
The two plays are below, one is from the Sun Belt Championship game last season, the other is from Saturday night. Both worked to perfection in similar situations, both proved to win the game. The next level thinking on this call was astounding. Conley hadn’t kept the ball all game on an RPO, but man, this play worked.
What Scott Satterfield is doing at Louisville through six games is something that I don’t think most of us expected, but maybe we should have. This is just the kind of guy he is. He loves his players and wants them to be as successful as possible. He’s brought Cardinal football back to life
