Breaking down TJ Lewis’ game

Moreso than any other Cardinal in this recruiting class, the question now becomes what TJ Lewis brings to the table for Louisville football.

Here’s what BRL’s Jacob Lane had to say in a previous analysis of Lewis’ game:

"Ranked as the 28th best dual-threat quarterback and the 79th best player overall in the state of Georgia, Lewis is a guy who the Cards have targeted because of his fit in the Scott Satterfield offense. As we’ve talked about a ton, and as Keith Wynne of Card Chronicle has talked about on the BRL Podcast on numerous occasions, fit is one of the most important check-offs for the coaching staff when recruiting a player. As Lewis told Demling of Cardinal Authority, “My high school runs basically the same stuff. It really fits my athleticism. They let the QB use their legs a lot. Louisville is not one of those teams that loves a pocket QB. I am not a pocket QB.” Speed is the name of the game with Lewis who thrives when using his legs out in the open field. He’s a raw thrower but a guy who shows a ton of upside as a deep and intermediate passer, something Micale Cunningham is highlighting in the offense. With time working with Ponce, Lewis can easily develop into not only a solid long-term quarterback but also a weapon that the staff can have at their disposal to add in more wrinkles into the already dynamic offense."

I love that Lewis initially identified Louisville as a school that does not traditionally have a pocket QB behind center, and that’s where you have to appreciate his mindset and read the tea leaves on what the coaching staff sees in him.

Lewis has been hearing from the start that he will get an opportunity to use his legs, and that’s ultimately what set the Cardinals apart.

Sources close to the situation have indicated to BRL that Lewis was high on a few other schools, but chose the Cardinals because of the opportunity to play quarterback.

Although Lewis had offers from the likes of Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech- who both made his top 5- it’s been emphasized that many other coaching staffs projected Lewis as a wide receiver, defensive back, or a utility guy at the next level.

Regardless of where Lewis ends up, it is promising that he ended up at Louisville because of the versatility that he brings to the table.
