Fix the mental errors on defense

The Hurricanes ran 60 offensive plays against the Cardinals defense last Saturday with a total of 485 yards of offense. That is a whopping 8.1 yards per play. Yikes.

However, if you watched the game, you would understand that the enormously high number was due to multiple hilariously bad assignment errors and busted coverages that included being the subject of social media memes.

Three specific mental lapses resulted in 195 free yards for Miami on three plays. The math would then tell you Miami had 290 yards of offense on 57 plays. That is good for 5.1 yards per play which would not show a dominant performance by the Louisville defense but certainly a much more respectable one.

The defensive personnel players and coaches alike will need to be on the same page this weekend to avoid the same kinds of busts. If the defense gives up three easy touchdowns against this week, the betting odds would be on Louisville being 1-2 at about 4pm Eastern time on Saturday.

The offense has proven themselves enough in the early stages of the season. Now the defense needs to prove they are an improved unit that is past the regular mental lapses that have occurred in the past.
