2. Pete Nygra, C
This entry could really be the offensive line as a whole, but let’s look at the senior, preseason Rimington Award watchlist recipient specifically. The offensive line has been the apparent weak link of the offense to this point in the season, with uninspiring performances against the JMU Dukes, as well as a consistent inability to provide open running lanes and pass protection for Louisville’s playmakers. It’s been a disappointing showing, with most of the apparent blame being placed at the feet of the front five.
It’s in these situations and in big moments that senior leadership needs to take shape and make itself noticeably present. The line should look to none other than the senior center, Pete Nygra. Nygra is the voice of the line, assisting Miller Moss with reading presnap coverages and pressure locations, and helping to lead key blocking schemes.
The offensive line must improve if the offense is to reach its full potential. The line has to be the foundation for the run as well as the strong line of defense for the quarterback in the pass game. We’ll see if Nygra can get his fellow teammates to buy in and be the strong force Jeff Brohm and the offense need it to be.
