Preparations are in full swing for the Louisville Cardinals, as we are less than two weeks away from the opening game against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. Final roster spots are being designated, and the starting rotations are taking full form. Head coach Jeff Brohm has expressed his excitement for this team and the outlook the Cardinals have entering the 2025 season.

Louisville’s expectations vary from media source to media source. However, most are consistent with having the Cardinals finish the season as one of the top 5 teams in the ACC. Some even have Louisville playing for the coveted ACC Championship in December.

For Louisville to rise and meet those expectations, the Cardinals will need key players to step up into leading roles for coach Brohm. The responsibility these players will possess on this team, and their ability to thrive in this setting, will have a direct impact on the Cardinals' results. This season will also be a time for these players to prove their worth on the field and set themselves up for future success.

5. Rodney Johnson, CB

Incoming senior transfer Rodney Johnson has emerged as the leader of the secondary under defensive coordinator Ron English. Johnson, who transferred in from Southern in the offseason, has stood out in fall camp and seemingly cemented his role as a starting cornerback. He’ll lead a position group with a lack of returning production and many question marks about their impact on the defense this season.

Johnson has an excellent opportunity to stand out in a group many are pointing to as a potential weakness for the Cardinals. His play on the field, especially early in the season, can work wonders for quieting those who had questions entering the season. It's a chance for Johnson to bolster a group that will be relied on as the safety net for the front seven and to make momentum-swinging plays.
