4. Defensive performance was a mixed bag of performances

The Louisville defense left many with mixed emotions as the game played out against the Pitt offense. The perceived strength of the defense, the defensive line, struggled early against the Pitt run, leading to early scores and a 17-0 start for Pitt. They quickly settled in and became a constant strength, especially in the pass rush, for the Cardinals' defense in the second half of the season.

The linebacker room had arguably the best day of the three defensive groups. Antonio Watts and TJ Quinn provided constant pressure to the opposing quarterback, being a key supplement to the defensive line in that particular category. They also came up big when both were able to record an interception in key situations. Watt's interception came at the 2-yard line, stalling a crucial drive for the Pitt offense in the 2nd half. Quinn’s came shortly after, providing a huge stop for the Louisville defense and continuing the comeback against the Panthers.

The defensive secondary was easily the most disappointing group of the day. It seemed that the last night of defense gave up big play after big play, continually putting the Louisville offense’s backs against the wall. Luckily, the linebacking corps was able to pick up some of the slack from the cornerbacks and safeties, but this will need to be addressed by defensive coordinator Ron English in the weeks ahead.
