Louisville football just suffered a crushing loss to Wake Forest, where the Cardinals were a 12.5-point favorite entering the game. Following that loss to the Demon Deacons, the Cards fans have every right to be upset, hurt, mad- all of the emotions- but let’s pump the brakes a little bit on firing Jeff Brohm.
Louisville football just repeated a painful pattern Cardinals fans know too well
Yes, Brohm hasn’t been perfect during his time at Louisville. The Cardinals have a troubling pattern where after a huge win, they lose the very next week to an opponent they shouldn’t lose to. It started with a loss to Pitt in 2023, Stanford in 2024, Cal in 2025, and now Wake Forest in 2026. While this loss stings and you should have plenty of overreactions, let’s not start having a serious debate just yet about Brohm’s future in Louisville.
While the Cardinals are in dire need of an ACC Championship or College Football Playoff run to get the doubters off Brohm’s back, but the idea of Brohm being in the hot seat, or any fans wanting to get rid of him, is crazy. Here’s why.
Louisville fans need to pump the brakes on the Jeff Brohm hot-seat talk
To start, Lincoln Kienholz was making just his fourth start of his career. The 4-star transfer has shown tremendous upside, but Kienholz is going to go through some growing pains. And while the Cardinals' last drive was a disaster, Kienholz put Louisville in position to tie the game, but the Cards' offensive line wasn’t able to buy him any time on 3rd down, which led to a massive sack, which ultimately led to Carson Hillbert missing a 41-yard field goal that he needed to make.
Yes, Brohm has things to work on, and as head coach, he deserves blame for these bad losses, but it isn’t time to even begin the hot-seat conversation. Before Brohm, the Cardinals went 4-7 in 2020, 6-7 in 2021, and 8-5 in 2022; since Brohm arrived at Louisville, the Cardinals have won nine games or more every season.
And beyond the field, Brohm has Louisville back in recruiting. He landed a top-five Transfer Portal class this offseason, and his 2027 recruiting class is looking like it could be the highest-rated Louisville recruiting class since 2023. The Cardinals are going to add 4-star wide receiver Ja’Hyde Brown, who has 19 receiving touchdowns in just six games and looks like he has a real chance to emerge as a top-50 overall recruit by the time he comes to Louisville.
And add that elite wide receiver with Lincoln Kienholz, this running back duo, and Brohm’s offensive mindset? Are you kidding? That should be another elite offense for the Cardinals.
Be frustrated, be livid, be mad, be hurt. It is all very understandable, but let’s not write Brohm off yet. He has Louisville trending in the right direction, and he is bringing in the talent. Now he needs to put together a full season and stop this ugly pattern of losing the next week after a big win.
