Louisville basketball is officially turning its focus from the regular season to the postseason, as the Cardinals will play in the ACC Tournament on Wednesday, March 11, against the winner of Syracuse and SMU. It is hard to believe the college basketball season is already reaching its conclusion, but the Cardinals have some meaningful games remaining, as they hope to get hot and go on another ACC Tournament run.
Pat Kelsey gives latest injury update on Mikel Brown Jr. ahead of ACC Tournament
One key question this postseason is Mikel Brown Jr.'s health. The 5-star freshman has been dealing with back pain this season, which has forced him to miss eight games from December to January, and he has recently missed the last two games of the regular season. Despite Brown missing 10 games so far, he is still likely to be an NBA lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, and recently, ESPN’s NBA Draft analyst Jeremy Woo revealed the biggest question surrounding Brown this postseason.
ESPN analyst reveals biggest question surrounding Mikel Brown Jr.
Entering the season, Brown was coming off a dominant gold-medal run with Team USA that made his draft stock soar and projected him as high as the No. 4 overall pick. Well, with his back injury and a bit of inconsistency, Brown is now projected to be around the No. 9 pick, and Woo just revealed the biggest question with Louisville’s 5-star before the postseason begins.
"Which version of Brown will we see in March?Jeremy Woo
The extended absence limited Brown's opportunity to boost his profile, with other freshmen playing well in the meantime. If he can maintain his form in the postseason spotlight and continue to remind teams of his talent, inching back up the board is very much a possibility.
Brown is a much better player when he is patient and looks to attack the paint first, opening up opportunities for teammates. When he's settling for tough shots and forcing up attempts, things haven't always gone well. His skill level isn't in doubt, but reinforcing that he can make strong pass-shoot decisions under pressure would help address some of the concerns scouts still have."
Before Brown reinjured his back, the 5-star freshman was playing his best basketball of the season. He looked confident, shot at a much higher rate, and was becoming one of the Cardinals' team leaders. He is averaging 18.2 points, 4.7 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.2 steals pergame while shooting 41.0 percent from the field and 34.4 percent from beyond the arc. However, before he reinjured his back, he scored 45, 29, 29, 19, and 24 while shooting 52 percent from the field and 54 percent from downtown.
But there is no doubt Brown has to take care of the ball a bit better. He hasn't had one game without turning it over this season, and in that five-game stretch, he averaged 4.0 turnovers per game. When Brown is patient and lets the game come to him, he is that dominant player we all saw against North Carolina State.
Louisville needs its 5-star freshman on the floor if it wants to make any kind of noise this March, and the latest update on Brown is that he remains day-to-day. The Cards take on SMU or Syracuse on March 11, and if they win, they play Miami on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
