Louisville basketball has an absolutely loaded schedule this upcoming season. The Cardinals recently added Michigan to their non-conference schedule, as the Cards will play the reigning National Champions on Dec. 5 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit as part of a two-year neutral-site series.
The Cardinals head coach had a viral moment with the Louisville fans last offseason, making it clear he doesn’t want Louisville to “duck the smoke” after the Cardinals were robbed and were given the 8-seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
"What I do want to do is make sure that when we get there, and the selection committee is looking at us, they know one thing, Louisville did not duck the smoke," Kelsey stated in 2025. "They didn't duck the smoke. So, that was our approach this year."
Now, Louisville has a loaded non-conference schedule, and while the Cardinals moved up one spot in ESPN’s way-too-early rankings, they also sent a clear message on who the Cards' “key” or biggest non-conference game is.
ESPN names Louisville's "key" non-conference game
When looking at Louisville’s non-conference schedule, three games immediatley stand out. The Cards have a three-game gauntlet in December, facing Texas on Dec. 1, Michigan on Dec. 5, and Kentucky on Dec. 12. ESPN moved Louisville up one spot in their updated rankings and has the Cardinals No. 12, and while Texas is ranked as high as No. 4 in these updated rankings, they still have the Cardinals' rivalry showdown as their “key” non-conference showdown.
"One of the best rivalries in the sport reconvenes for a 59th meeting. It should serve as a timely check-in for both sides, too, with Louisville leaning heavily on an experienced and talented group of transfers and Kentucky also completing an extensive rebuild last spring. Louisville and Kentucky continue to be one of the most exciting rivalries in college basketball. The Cardinals and the Wildcats had incredibly busy offseasons as the two rivals completely rebuilt their rosters. Louisville’s biggest addition was Flory Bidunga, who ranked No. 1 in the Transfer Portal, while Kentucky’s biggest addition was the No. 2 transfer Milan Momcilovic.
The Cardinals and the Wildcats claimed the top two portal classes in the nation, with Louisville securing the No. 1 class and Kentucky the No. 2. Now, the two rivals are going to go head-to-head in Lexington this upcoming season, where the Cardinals will try and earn their second straight win over Kentucky for the first time since they did won back-to-back in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
Kentucky is ranked seven spots behind Louisville, having dropped two spots to No. 19. This rivalry showdown is going ot be must-watch TV yet again, and Louisville fans are hoping the Cardinals can secure just their sixth road win in program history over Kentucky and their first road win over the Wildcats since that 2007-08 season.
