Louisville basketball fans learned late this week that the Cardinals added another blockbuster game to their 2026-27 schedule. Louisville is set to face the Michigan Wolverines on Dec. 5 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit as part of a two-year neutral-site series.
Pat Kelsey made it clear last offseason he didn’t want to duck the smoke, and he wants Louisville to play some of the best teams in college basketball, and that is what he did last year and what he is doing again this year. The Cardinals' schedule looks gruesome, but if Louisville can learn from last year and earn some major wins, it will set the Team up for a successful season.
However, there is no sugarcoating it: the Cardinals' non-conference schedule is going to be challenging, to say the least.
Louisville basketball's non-conference schedule is an absolute gauntlet
Louisville adding Michigan is just the cherry on top of how insane this non-conference schedule is going to be for UofL. The Wolverines are coming off a 37-3 2025-26 season and are the reigning national champions.
Michigan is now one of the Cardinals' toughest opponents for this upcoming season, making Louisville’s non-conference schedule an absolute gauntlet. As of right now, Louisville fans know 10 of the Cardinals' 13 non-conference opponents, and when looking at those 10 games, it is absolutely absurd.
Louisville starts off facing Kansas in an exhibition game for the second straight season, and then, as of now, has Chattanooga and Morehead State in early November. Then the next known date is on Nov. 24 against Texas Tech in the Players Era Festival first round. They would then play St. John’s or Oregon in the second round, and the third round would be against Tennessee, Iowa State, Maryland, or San Diego State.
Players Era Festival tournament, Louisville’s December doesn’t get any easier. The Cardinals are scheduled to face Texas, which ranks as high as No. 7 in ESPN’s way-too-early rankings on Dec. 1; then they face Michigan on Dec. 5, which ranks No. 5 in ESPN’s way-too-early rankings; and then on Dec. 12 they have their blockbuster rivalry showdown with Kentucky, which ranks No. 17, according to ESPN.
It will be fun for Louisville to try to take down the reigning national champions, but the Cardinals' three-game stretch with Texas, Michigan and Kentucky will tell a lot about this new Kelsey team.
