Louisville football has a massive game this weekend as the Cardinals will look to cement themselves as a true ACC Title contender and College Football Playoff contender. Week 3 has a few rank-vs-rank matchups, with LSU and Ole Miss getting a lot of the attention.

However, that isn’t the only notable game this weekend, and Rece Davis just made that clear. ESPN’s college football analyst just shone a bright light on Louisville’s huge matchup against SMU this weekend, and he made it crystal clear why this game has such high stakes.

Louisville vs SMU has major ACC Title implications

Entering this season, the top three teams in the ACC were Miami, SMU, and Louisville. However, Miami doesn’t play the Cardinals or the Mustangs, so this weekend's matchup has major ACC implications — even though it is in Week 3.

Not many are talking about this game, including ESPN, which bumped the Cardinals to ESPN 2, but Davis sent the perfect message about why college football fans should tune in this weekend.

"“There are a couple of other games that I think are being a little bit overshadowed because of LSU and Ole Miss. The first one I think of is SMU and Louisville. And through two weeks of the season, what we have seen from the two quarterbacks in this game, you have seen the top two guys in the country in total offense in Kevin Jennings and SMU and Lincoln Kienholz from Louisville. The guy we just talked about who was effective both on the ground and throwing the football against Ole Miss. I think these two teams- the winner of this game- you look at as the best challenger to Miami. And Miami plays neither of them in the regular season, so we might see this somewhere down the road. I am really looking forward to this game because what we have seen from these two in the first two weeks of the season is explosive offense, and I think they are going to go up and down the field too.”"

The Hurricanes are the heavy favorites to make it to Charlotte, but who they will face is the big question in the ACC. And as Davis hinted, many predict that whoever wins this weekend will face Miami in the ACC Championship game. Now, of course, whoever wins has to take care of business and finish the long season, but Miami, Louisville, and SMU all have favorable conference schedules, which is another reason why this game is huge for the ACC race.

Louisville vs. SMU will be a thrilling game for college football fans as two elite offenses square off. Jennings and Kienholz are two of the top quarterbacks through the first two weeks, and now they face each other in a game that could decide who makes it to the ACC Championship Game.

The Cards and the Mustangs will kick off Saturday at 3:30 p.m. local time.
