Louisville basketball fans saw on Monday afternoon that one of the Cardinals' former assistant coaches took a new job with Dan Hurley and the UConn Huskies. Mike Pegues is a former Louisville assistant coach who spent four seasons on staff before leaving for Butler in the 2022-23 season.

Now, On3 Sports and Joe Tipton have just reported that the former Cardinals coach will leave Butler and join Hurley's staff.

When he was with Louisville, the Cardinals went 70-47, including the 2018-19 season, where he helped lead the Cards to a 20-14 record and a spot in the NCAA Tournament, and the 2019-20 season, where he helped lead Louisville to a 24-7 record and was trending towards making the Big Dance before it was shut down because of COVID.

Pegues served as Louisville’s head coach in 18 games, including an early six-game stretch in the 2021-22 season during Chris Mack's suspension. The Cardinals went 5-1 in that stretch, and he finished 7-11 as the Cards' head coach.

Also worth noting, during his four seasons with Louisville, he helped the Cardinals land in the top 25 for two recruiting classes; their 2021 recruiting class ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation, and their 2019 recruiting class ranked No. 7. The biggest splash during his time with Louisville was 5-star Samuell Williamson who committed to Louisville part of that dominant 2019 recruiting class as he ranked as high as No. 16 in the 2019 recruiting cycle.

Louisville basketball's offseason coaching changes

Now, the former Cardinal head coach is off to UConn after serving as an assistant head coach at Butler. With Butler, Pegues served as an assistant for another four seasons and helped the Bulldogs with player development, recruiting, and scouting.

Louisville fans also saw some staff changes this offseason under Pat Kelsey, as the Cardinals had to replace a couple of staff members. The Cards saw assistant coach Thomas Carr head to Indiana, and Executive Director of Player Personnel and Strategic Initiatives Brian Kloman is now the new general manager at Auburn.

So, Kelsey and Louisville had some work to do with their staff. The Cards replaced Carr with former National Champion assistant coach, John Andrzejek. The former Florida assistant coach helped the Gators win the National Championship after they went 36-4 in the 2024-25 season. In his two years with Florida, the Gators went 60-16.
