Louisville football’s fall camp is underway as the Cardinals are officially beginning to prep for their massive Week 1 showdown with Ole Miss. The Cardinals are currently unranked in the preseason Coaches Poll, but if Louisville can make a statement against the No. 10 Rebels, this team will prove they have a real chance at a special season this year.
The Cardinals were very active in the Transfer portal this offseason, adding over 32 transfers, including their starting quarterback for the fourth straight year under Jeff Brohm. The Cardinals and Brohm have gone the Transfer Portal route every year for their starting quarterback, including this year, when they added 4-star Ohio State transfer Lincoln Kienholz.
Now, as the season is quickly approaching, Brohm makes it clear he is confident in his QB and that Kienholz is “starving” for his opportunity to shine.
Lincoln Kienholz is 'hungry' for his moment with Louisville
The 4-star Ohio State transfer is a former 4-star recruit out of high school who ranked inside the top 200 and No. 11 among quarterbacks. He committed to Ohio State after earning over 13 offers, and now, after spending his first three seasons with the Buckeyes, including winning a National Championship, he transfers to Louisville to be the main guy.
“We think he has excellent tools,” stated Brohm. “He does have a big arm. He can throw the ball vertically, and with that he is a really good athlete. He can run. He can make plays with his feet. He can throw on the move, and those things are all positive. Those things are all pluses, and those show up.”
The Cardinals have high expectations for Kienholz. He was incredibly accurate in high school, throwing for 3,422 yards and 46 touchdowns his senior year, and finished with 9,100 yards and 104 touchdowns. Now, the time is his. He spent three years on the bench at Ohio State, but Brohm can see the motivation in Kienholz and is excited for what is to come.
“I think he is hungry. I think he knows it is his time to prove himself. I think we are going to put him in a system to get that done. Spread the ball a little bit, and not make it all about the passing game, but still try and be explosive. I think he can play very well in our system.”
When looking at Louisville and the Cardinals' CFP chances, a lot of analysts reveal it is up to Kienholz and how he turns out. The former 4-star has the potential to lead the Cardinals to their second ACC Championship Game under Brohm, but with only 36 pass attempts in three years, he has to prove he can get it done.
Louisville doesn’t need a Heisman season from Kienholz, but they need him to be able to win games. Louisville has the roster to compete for the ACC Title, but as the fans saw last year, you need a quarterback to win big-time games.
