Louisville football has its first true road game of the year, and the Cardinals just got a concerning update from Jeff Brohm. The Cardinals are coming off their second loss of the season, after Louisville fell to Wake Forest 30-27.

The Cardinals' explosive offense went silent in the second half, and as they prepare for their road matchup against North Carolina State, the offense just got an eye-opening update about star quarterback Lincoln Kienholz. The QB1 suffered an injury late in the game against Wake Forest, and Brohm’s update has Louisville fans holding their breath.

Kienholz has been the glue of this offense, as the 4-star transfer was emerging as one of the top rising stars in college football. However, Brohm’s update has Cardinals fans very worried about his health and whether he will be available this weekend.

Kienholz is a dual-threat quarterback who quickly grabbed national media’s attention. The Ohio State transfer has thrown for 1,140 yards, seven touchdowns, and has completed 69 percent of his passes. In addition to his passing, he has rushed 45 times for 134 yards and leads the Cardinals with six rushing touchdowns.
Kienholz was a huge reason for Louisville’s early success this year, throwing for 300 yards or more in his first two starts with Louisville and leading the Cardinals to their first-ever win over SMU. However, after a late-game hit, Kienholz is now a game-time decision for the Cardinals' fifth game of the year as Lousiville tries to improve to 3-2 and win in a tough environment on the road in Raleigh.
If Kienholz isn’t available this weekend, the Cardinals brought in two other QBs this offseason in 4-star freshman Briggs Cherry and West Georgia transfer Davin Wydner. Cherry was one of the nation’s rising stars in the 2026 recruiting class, ranking as high as No. 263 overall and No. 18 among quarterbacks.
As for Wydner, the transfer is another dual threat who threw for 3,390 yards and 10 touchdowns at West Georgia and rushed for 670 yards and 10 touchdowns, according to ESPN.
Cardinals fans will pay close attention to the first injury report later this week, hoping Kienholz is listed as at least questionable and can play in this crucial road game. Louisville and North Carolina State will kick off this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. local time.
