Pat Kelsey has really elevated the Cardinals' recruiting since he arrived, landing 5-star recruits in consecutive classes. He landed his first 5-star, Mikel Brown Jr., in the 2025 recruiting class, then added 5-star transfer Flory Bidunga and 5-star 2026 recruit Obinna Ekezie Jr.
Louisville is hours away from learning if Pat Kelsey lands his dream 5-star PG
Now, he is looking to make it three straight, as the Cardinals put themselves in a great position with multiple 5-stars. One recruit Louisville has had its eye on for a long time is point guard Reese Alston.
The Houston native is one of the nation's top prospects, and after a long recruiting process, the 5-star made his decision. Unfortunately, Alston decided to team up with King Gibson, as the 5-star point guard officially committed to LSU.

5-star PG Reese Alston commits to LSU
Throughout the summer, Louisville made it clear Alston was at the top of their target list. Kelsey visited Alston multiple times, watching the 5-star in action in multiple states. Louisville earned an official visit from the 5-star earlier this year, and after Kelsey watched him live at events, he visited Alston after his visit to LSU.
However, Kelsey’s hard work didn’t pay off this time, as Alston committed to the LSU Tigers over the Cardinals. Alston earned over 35 offers and originally narrowed his list to just seven schools. Finally, when he made his commitment date official, he cut the list down to just five schools.
He ultimately committed to LSU over Louisville, Kentucky, Wichita State, and Tennessee. The 5-star point guard ranks as high as No. 9 overall and No. 3 among point guards. He is the top ranked recruit from Texas after a dominant junior year where he averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game, earning MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team honors
The Cards were once a favorite in this recruiting race, but in the last month, LSU emerged as the frontrunner,
This wasn’t completely shocking to Cardinals fans, as Rivals updated their prediction meter earlier this week and gave LSU a dominant 90% chance of earning his commitment. Their prediction was spot on as LSU and Will Wade landed their second 5-star guard over the Cardinals.
Louisville will now turn its attention to DeMarcus Henry, as the No. 2 overall recruit is down to just four schools and will make his decision tomorrow. Louisville is battling Kentucky, North Carolina, and Arkansas for Henry, and hopefully Kelsey and Louisville have better luck tomorrow.
