Louisville basketball and Pat Kelsey have been making a huge push in the 2027 recruiting class, and on Thursday, October 29, they will learn whether they land their first 5-star. The Cardinals have been trending with multiple recruits, but one target they have made a lot of noise about is 5-star point guard Reese Alston.

Louisville just got a major update in its pursuit of 5-star PG Reese Alston

Kelsey made multiple visits to Alston over the summer and made it clear the Houston native was one of his top priorities in the 2027 recruiting class. He originally cut his list to seven schools after earning over 35 offers, and now he has cut it to five.

The Cardinals are battling Kentucky, Wichita State, Tennessee, and LSU for the 5-star, and Louisville is just hours away from learning whether he will be a Cardinal, as he commits on CBS Sports on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 4:00 PM local time.

Louisville was considered a frontrunner for Alston for most of his recruiting process, as multiple insiders predicted the Cardinals would land the 5-star. Over the summer, On3 Sports Jamie Shaw predicted Louisville would land Alston with medium confidence, but made it clear LSU was a major threat.

Then Fox insider Aaron Torres called Louisville the team to beat.

“I think Louisville is going to get this guy eventually; I really do,” stated Torres. “Pat Kelsey opened the recruiting period visiting five-star guard Reese Alston - just like they opened the summer seeing him."

However, that has now changed drastically. The LSU Tigers are the dominant favorites entering decision day, as Rivals Prediction Meter gives LSU a 90.7% chance of landing him and Louisville just 1.1%.

LSU earned an official visit in September, followed by a visit from Kelsey, but the Tigers now appear to be the favorites. Alston is a unanimous 5-star point guard who would be Kelsey’s second 5-star PG commitment in three years and third 5-star commitment in three straight recruiting classes.

While LSU is now the favorite, this is still worth watching, as the Cardinals made it clear that all offseason, Alston was a top target in the 2027 recruiting class. He is an elite scorer who averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game, earning MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team honors. The Houston native ranks as high as No. 9 overall and No. 3 among point guards.

Now, Kelsey’s offseason visits and all his hard work come down to today. Louisville will see if Rivals is right, whether he commits to LSU, or if Kelsey worked some last-second magic and the Louisville Cardinals land their first 5-star in the 2027 recruiting class.
