Louisville basketball is trending with 4-star shooting guard De’Shayne Montgomery as the Cardinals are making a push for the Dayton transfer. It was reported Wednesday afternoon that Louisville will host Montgomery for an official visit on today, April 22, as it appears Pat Kelsey is looking to add depth to his backcourt.

2 Dream, 2 reach, 2 realistic targets for Louisville after John Blackwell's update

Louisville learned Tuesday that it missed on 5-star transfer John Blackwell, and with that news breaking, Kelsey appears to be moving on to Montgomery. The Cardinals' move to Montgomery confirms that Kelsey will likely have Adrian Wooley as his starting shooting guard, and, if all goes to plan, the Dayton transfer would come off the bench.

Louisville is off to a hot start this offseason, especially for its backcourt, as it landed the No. 4 point guard from the portal in Jackson Shelstad and was able to avoid Wooley entering the portal. However, Kelsey needs depth, and Montgomery emerges as a good option to come off the bench.

The Cardinals need someone who can get hot and be an elite scorer off the bench, and the 4-star transfer would be just that. This past season with Dayton, he made the All-Atlantic-10 Third Team after averaging 13.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 49 percent from the field and 33.5 percent from beyond the arc.

However, he would just be an elite scorer off the bench, he would also be a key piece and a spark on the defensive end. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard averaged 2.1 steals per game this past season, 1.1 steals per game with Georgia last season, and 1.7 steals per game his freshman season. He has earned a total of 141 steals over three seasons, including 77 with Dayton in the 2025-26 season.

The Cardinals need a two-way guard who can be reliable on both ends of the floor, and Montgomery is emerging as a perfect target. He scored 20 points or more seven times this past season, including his season-high 27-point performance against East Tennessee State. He also earned three steals or more in 12 games, including one game with six steals and another with seven steals.

This would fill a glaring hole for Kelsey and Louisville, and would be a much-needed splash as he ranks No. 131 overall and No. 24 among shooting guards.
