It's been a crazy offseason for Louisville basketball, as Pat Kelsey has been challenged to completely rebuild his roster. The Cards lost nine of their top 10 players from this past season, including all five starters, forcing Kelsey to hit the Transfer Portal hard.
Kelsey built another elite roster from the portal, as he landed a top portal class in the nation. The Cardinals then landed UNC transfer Seth Trimble following the “five-for-five” rule, and that is where things get even more complicated.
Trimble and Louisville fans learned he was ruled ineligible after the Tenth Circuit agreed with the NCAA on the eligibility status of the Class of 2022. Trimble is now trying to earn his eligibility back, and today was a promising step in the right direction.
Seth Trimble granted temporary eligibility
After it was ruled that Trimble was ineligible for the upcoming season, the UNC transfer had to file a lawsuit seeking an injunction to earn his eligibility back. Trimble did just that, and today he took another step forward as Judge Brian Edward granted two motions in the Wells vs. NCAA case, including allowing the players to play this season. Well, as of right now, at least.

This is far from over, as the Kentucky lawsuit is a temporary order, but it is good news for the Cardinals and Trimble. It would be a huge boost to Louisville if he were granted eligibility, as the Cardinals went from a top-15 team in the nation to ranked as high as No. 8 in the country, with the seventh-highest odds to win it all, following Trimble's commitment to UofL.
Now, Louisville and its fans are sweating through this process and waiting to see what the result will ultimately be. No one has a clear timeline, and the season is under two months away.
Kelsey called it a “no-brainer” to sign Trimble, as he revealed the UNC transfer has a “twinkle in his eye” and a “special aura”. The Cardinals have been starving for a Final Four run, and the North Carolina guard would be a massive addition to this already loaded team.
He played all four years with the Tar Heels, including this past season, when he went viral for hitting the buzzer-beater against Duke and defeating the Blue Devils. He would also be joining Louisville, following his best year, after averaging 4.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 47 percent from the field.
There is still so much uncertainty about whether Trimble will suit up as a Cardinal this upcoming season. However, today feels like a promising update that gives Louisville fans more confidence in the guard's chances of playing.
