Louisville basketball is having a monster offseason as Pat Kelsey has landed six transfers and one 2026 recruit. The Cardinals are emerging as a legitimate Final Four contender at the moment, as Kelsey and the Cardinals are ranked in nearly everyone's top 15.
Pat Kelsey's recruiting magic could actually impact Mark Pope getting shown the door
With Louisville trying to cut nets down and make their first Final Four since 2013, the Cardinals fans are hoping to see some other additions still. Louisville has earned commitments from elite defenders, as Flory Bidunga won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year last season with 91 blocks, as well as Obinna Ekezie Jr., who averaged 1.8 blocks per game in high school, but now Louisville fans want an elite scorer.
Well, that elite scorer might just be before everyone’s eyes.
Adrian Wooley is poised for a breakout season
Louisville added 5-star transfer Adrian Wooley last offseason, and now the hope is for him to take a huge step forward and be the elite guard he was at Kennesaw State. Wooley showed a lot of promise and upside this past season, averaging 8.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 45 percent from the field.
However, now with Mikel Brown Jr. and Ryan Conwell gone, the Cardinals are going to need Wooley to be their next Conwell. They need him to play with confidence and attack like he did in the NCAA Tournament against Michigan State when he scored 17 points on 70 percent shooting from the field.
The Cardinals fans aren’t worried about the defense, everyone believes that side of the court is set. Now, they want someone who can be a consistent scorer, and it feels like Wooley could be that guy. At Kennesaw State, when he was the main guy on offense, he averaged 18.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, and made 73 3-pointers on 42.2 percent from beyond the arc and 51.2 percent from the field.
He scored 20 points or more 15 times that freshman season, including 25 points or more in seven games, and his career-high a 32 point performance. He splashed 2.2 3's per game, and made three or more 3-pointers in 13 games and four or more 3-pointers in four games, including six made 3's in one game.
He is a crafty guard who can create his own shot with a stepback or his handles, but can also blow past his defender and finish at the rim through contact. Wooley has what it takes to be an elite scorer for Kelsey, and, given how this roster is built, Kelsey is going to need Wooley to shoot and score like he did his freshman season.
So, yes, the Cardinals could use a big-time scorer or a 3-point specialist, but Wooley has shown in the past that he can be that. Now, he just has to take that leap this offseason, which, if he does, the ACC will be terrified of this Cardinals squad.
