Louisville basketball and Pat Kelsey had a busy recruiting offseason, landing 10 commitments, including seven from the Transfer Portal and three from the 2026 recruiting class. Beyond recruiting for this upcoming season, Kelsey attended multiple recruiting events and made a strong push for some of the top prospects in the 2027 recruiting class.
Louisville has been in the mix for multiple 5-star recruits in the 2027 recruiting class, including the No. 1 overall recruit, CJ Rosser. The elite power forward recently took his second unofficial visit to North Carolina, and Jamie Shaw of On3 Sports continues to favor the Tar Heels for Rosser.
While Louisville hasn’t been hearing the best things about Rosser, the Cardinals keep hearing exactly what they want to hear about one of the top point guards in the recruiting class, Reese Alston.
Louisville basketball remains favorite for 5-star Reese Alston
Kelsey has focused heavily on recruiting the point guard since he arrived at Louisville, as the Cardinals have had some great point guards during his two seasons: Mikel Brown Jr. and Chucky Hepburn. Now, he will have Jackson Shelstad this upcoming season, and it is clear that the dream and the plan are to try to have Alston next season.
Louisville is one of many teams in the mix for Alston, but the Cardinals continue to trend as the frontrunner in Shaw’s eyes. The On3 Sports college basketball recruiting analyst logged another way-too-early prediction, and for Alston, the Cardinals were once again selected as the frontrunner to land the 5-star point guard.
Alston has already earned over 36 offers, including from major programs like Purdue, Florida State, Houston, Illinois, Kansas, Texas, USC, and others. However, the schools making the most noise with the 5-star guard are Louisville, Kentucky, Wichita State, LSU, and reportedly a newcomer, Tennessee.
Shaw reports the Volunteers are trying to get in the mix for Alston, and 247Sports recently added Tennessee to the list with “warm” next to their name. The Cardinals and Wichita State are the two teams that have earned visits so far, but Kentucky, LSU, and now Tennessee are reportedly pushing to gain momentum on Louisville.
Alston is a 5-star recruit who ranks as high as No. 6 overall and No. 3 among point guards. The 6-foot-3 point guard made the MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team and earned honorable mention on its overall All-American teams after averaging 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game.
Kelsey attended multiple games of Alston’s this summer, and now Louisville will have to keep an eye on Tennessee and avoid the Volunteers coming in late and stealing their top target in the 2027 recruiting class.
