The summer months are winding down as we quickly approach August. During the summer months, college basketball and football put a lot of focus on high school recruiting, including Pat Kelsey and the Louisville Cardinals.
Kelsey was traveling all over for a few recruits this summer, but one prospect continues to stand out from the rest. Louisville and Kelsey love to recruit elite guards, as Kelsey is trying to cement Louisville as the ‘PGU’ in college basketball.
One of Kelsey’s top targets in the 2027 recruiting class is the 5-star point guard Reese Alston, and while there is no major update from On3 Sports, Jamie Shaw continues to give the slight edge in favor of the Cardinals.
5-star Reese Alston recruiting update favors Louisville basketball
Louisville has shown a lot of interest in Alston this summer, as Kelsey visited multiple of the 5-star's games this offseason. Kelsey was in Richmond, Va to watch Alston at the Puma NXTPro 16 event and then made the trip to Bryan, Texas, shortly after to watch the elite point guard play at the PRO16/NXTPRO League.
Now, as we are in August, the Cardinals are trending as the slight favorite in Shaw’s eyes. Earlier this summer, Shaw made a bold prediction with a 25% confidence level in favor of Louisville, and now, as of August 3rd, he still is hearing the “slight lead” is in favor of the Cardinals.
The four main teams in the heated race for Alston include Louisville, Wichita State, LSU, and the Cardinals' in-state rival, the Kentucky Wildcats. In the early stages of this race, it was just Louisville, LSU, and Wichita State, but later in the summer, Mark Pope and Kentucky joined the race for Alston, putting the Cards and the Cats in another fierce recruiting battle.
Louisville and Kentucky each have a 2027 commitment already, as the Cardinals have 4-star forward Ferlandes Wright, who ranks as high as No. 56 in the 2027 cycle, and Kentucky landed 5-star Ryan Hampton, who ranks as high as No. 13.
The 5-star point guard is one of the top-ranked overall recruits in the 2027 recruiting class, as Alston is coming off an eye-popping season in which he averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game. Alston went on to make the MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team and earned honorable mention on its overall All-American teams.
Alston ranks as high as No. 6 overall, No. 2 among point guards, and No. 1 among Texas recruits in the 2027 recruiting class. The Cardinals have landed one 5-star in back-to-back recruiting classes, and it is clear the hope is Alston continues that streak.
