Louisville basketball’s 2026-27 roster is beginning to fill out as the Cardinals' 2026 recruiting class is surging at the perfect time. Before May, the Cardinals had zero 2026 commitments, and it was clear Pat Kelsey was going to go all-in on the Transfer Portal class.

Pat Kelsey’s monster offseason continues with Louisville’s latest 4-star addition

Kelsey targets elite 2026 recruits like Tyran Stokes, Taylen Kinney, Colben Landrew, and many others, but after the Cards missed out on those big-time recruits, Kelsey pivoted to the portal, where he struck gold. Louisville and Kelsey now have the No. 1 portal class in the nation, where they landed 5-star Flory Bidunga, and multiple 4-stars, and because of that portal class, Kelsey was able to land three 2026 recruits in nine days.

The Cards were relying heavily on the Transfer Portal, and that became clear in late 2025 when Kinney, Stokes, Landrew, and others committed elsewhere. Well, once Kelsey landed Bidunga, the dominoes fell their way, as Jackson Shelstad committed with the 5-star transfer, and then Karter Knox, and now Louisville has six transfer commitments and a top 20 2026 recruiting class.

In just nine days, Louisville landed a 5-star 2026 recruit, a 4-star 2026 recruit, and a 3-star 2026 recruit, which has the Cardinals ranked as high as No. 18 in 247Sports 2026 Recruit Basketball Composite Team Rankings.

Now, the biggest addition was a 2027 recruit, Obinna Ekezie Jr., but he reclassified to the 2026 recruiting class, where he remained a 5-star recruit and the No. 1 center. Ekezie was a historic commit for the Cardinals, as when he committed to Louisville in the 2027 recruiting class, he was the highest-rated commitment in program history. Now, in the 2026 recruiting class, he ranks No. 14 overall and is a key reason why Louisville ranks No. 18 in the 2026 recruiting class rankings.

The other big-time get for Louisville is the most recent addition, Boyuan Zhang. The 4-star recruit ranks as high as No. 46 overall in the 2026 recruiting class and a top 20 small forward. He is coming off a dominant season in which he averaged 20.2 points per game and ranked second in scoring in the Nike EYBL Scholastic League.

Zhang took a weekend visit to Louisville after visiting Oregon, Cal, Illinois, and Minnesota, but the Cardinals earned his commitment, and the 4-star will now be a key bench piece this upcoming season behind Karter Knox.

Rounding out Louisville’s 2026 recruiting class is Isaac Ellis. The elite scorer is coming off an MVP year in OTE, averaging 31.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 9.5 assists per game. The 3-star ranks as high as No. 171 in the 2026 recruiting class and No. 20 among point guards.

Louisville’s recent 2026 surge is eye-popping to the nation, as these past nine days have been dominant for Kelsey. He prioritized the Transfer Portal and landed the No. 1 portal class in the nation, including the No. 1 overall transfer, and then switched gears to the 2026 recruiting class, where he landed three recruits in nine days, including the No. 1 center and a 5-star, and Monday’s 4-star commitment.
