Louisville basketball had a monster offseason, adding nine players. Pat Kelsey and company had to completely rebuild this roster, losing nine of their top 10 players from this past season, and the Cardinals exceeded expectations with the roster he built.
Jackson Shelstad sends strong message about Louisville's 5-star transfer Flory Bidunga
The Cardinals added some big-time playmakers this offseason, including a 5-star from the Transfer Portal in Flory Bidunga and a 5-star from the 2026 recruiting class in Obinna Ekezie Jr. These two 5-stars get a lot of the attention for Kelesey's addition, along with two former 5-stars Jackson Shelstad and Karter Knox, who he added from the portal as well.
However, 4-star commit from the 2026 recruiting class, Boyuan Zhang, continues to turn heads this offseason, leading up to the 2026-27 season, as the Cardinals updated the entire roster's height and weight, and the small forward is officially 6-foot-9.
Louisville's Boyuan Zhang grows two inches before debut
Zhang has emerged as a potential major X-factor off the bench for Louisville, as the 4-star freshman continues to earn praise heading into the season, and now he appears to have grown two inches and is 6-foot-9.

When he committed to Louisville, he was 6-foot-7, but now, at 6-foot-9, he appears to be a huge X-factor off the bench. Not many analysts or the media are giving. Zhang deserves the attention he may get, but he has a glaring chance to be the Cardinals' sharpshooter off the bench, and at 6-foot-9, that is a major weapon for Kelsey to have.
When Zhang committed to Louisville, he was ranked as a 4-star prospect and No. 77 in the recruiting class, but, after his impressive run at Nike EYBL, he surged up to No. 49 in the 2027 cycle and No. 19 among small forwards.
Zhang has earned high praise from On3 Sports Jamie Shaw, as he was one of the first reporters to put the nation on notice about what Kelsey got in the 4-star. Shaw reported the 4-star small forward is a “sniper” and a “real shooter,” and that he can knock down shots consistently from 30 feet out.
During his time in the Nike EYBL Scholastic League, the Cardinals' 6-foot-9 freshman averaged the second-most points per game with a dominant 20.2 points per game. And before he ran in the Nike EYBL League, he played in the FIBA U19 World Cup last summer, averaging 14.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for China.
Louisville needed depth off the bench and 3-point shooting, and Zhang is trending as that guy for Kelsey. But now he has just gotten that much more dangerous after growing a couple of inches and measuring in at 6-foot-9 before this season. Louisville is going to be super long and a pain to guard this offseason, and on defense, its length should be a nightmare for the opponents.
While Zhang won't be a starter, Shaw made it clear he believes he will have an immediate impact for Louisville and could be an early guy off the bench. After the Cardinals fans saw him make 14 3's straight in a social media clip, and now that he is 6-foot-9, it is easy to see why Shaw is so high on Zhang.
