Louisville basketball recently landed its third commitment of the 2026 recruiting class as 4-star wing Boyuan Zhang committed to the Cardinals. Pat Kelsey has had a dominant offseason so far, landing nine commitments, including two 5-stars and multiple 4-stars.

Louisville basketball’s newest commit could solve major offensive concern

The Cardinals landed Zhang over notable ACC and Big 10 programs, as Oregon, Illinois, Minnesota, and Cal all received official visits and were in the mix for the elite 4-star. Well, Zhang committed to Louisville earlier this week, and shortly after, his recruiting rankings soared.

Louisville basketball's Boyuan Zhang soars in 247 Sports rankings update

When Zhang committed to the Cardinals, 247Sports had him ranked No. 77 in the nation, but after the Cardinals landed his commitment, he jumped all the way up to No. 49 in the nation, No. 19 among small forwards, and remained a unanimous 4-star recruit.

The elite scorer is coming off a dominant season with Veritas Academy, as he was the second-highest scorer in the Nike EYBL Scholastic League after averaging 20.2 points per game. Before this past season Zhang turned heads worldwide with his impressive showing at the FIBA U19 World Cups last summer where he averaged 14.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for China.

Zhang has the potential to make an immediate impact with Kelsey and Louisville coming off the bench. On3 Sports Jamie Shaw doesn’t believe he will start, but did state he thinks he can get a good amount of minutes for Louisville. He also made it clear that Louisville got exactly what they needed with Zhang’s commitment, as Shaw is very high on the 4-star's ability to shoot from beyond the arc.

Shaw emphasized that he is a “sniper” and a “real shooter,” and that he can knock down shots consistently from 30 feet out.

So, now that Zhang has jumped up to No. 49 in the nation in the 2026 cycle, that means Kelsey has landed two recruits in the top 50, as he also landed 5-star center and No. 14 overall 2026 recruit Obinna Ekezie Jr. Kelsey knew he had to rebuild this roster as he lost nine of his top ten players from the 2025-26 season, but he is exceeding all expectations so far with this roster he has built.

They will need time to gel and build chemistry, but on paper Louisville looks like a team that can go on a run in March next year.
