Louisville basketball recently got a major update from 5-star point guard Reese Alston, as the guard cut his list down to just seven schools, putting Louisville in a heated recruiting battle with LSU, Kentucky, Tennessee, Wichita State, Houston, and Vanderbilt. On3 Sports Joe Tipton recently revealed that many sources are calling the Cardinals the frontrunner for the 5-star point guard, but he made sure to emphasize the race isn’t over just yet.
Alston has earned over 36 offers during his recruiting process, and reports say Louisville, LSU, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Wichita State are making the strongest push for Alston. Of these five, Wichita State and Louisville are the only teams to earn an official visit; LSU has been in the mix just as long as Louisville, and Tennessee is a team that just entered the mix.
However, the team Tipton reported as the Cardinals' biggest threat to land Alston is? None other than their biggest rival, Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats.
Kentucky emerges as Louisville's biggest threat for 5-star PG
Louisville and Kentucky are one of the biggest rivalries in college basketball, and in recent years, it isn’t just on the court. These two programs also go head-to-head for recruits, whether from high school or the Transfer Portal.
Pope and Kelsey are both trying to bring a National Championship to their respective program, and the best way to do that is to land a 5-star point guard like Alston. Tipton made it clear Kelsey is the frontrunner right now, but his biggest threat is once again Pope’s Wildcats.
“Kentucky appears to be the main challenger to the ’Cards,” stated Tipton. Alston has taken early official visits to Louisville and Wichita State, and he’s also been on campus at Kentucky for an unofficial visit. He’s expected to line up additional official visits in the coming weeks. However, the longer this recruitment draws out, the more opportunity there is for other programs to begin gaining momentum.”
These two programs recently battled it out for 5-star transfer Milan Momcilovic, who signed with the Wildcats. And before that, they went head-to-head for 5-star point guard Taylen Kinney, and there are rumors that there was a verbal altercation between Kelsey and Pope.
Now, these two coaches are going after the same 5-star point guard for the second straight year, and Kelsey has the early lead once again heading into fall. Alston ranks as high as No. 7 overall and No. 2 among point guards, and Louisville has prioritized him the entire offseason.
This is shaping up to be another massive recruiting battle between these two rivals, and right now Kelsey and the Cardinals have the lead. Each school has a commitment already in the 2027 cycle, but none are ranked as high as Alston. This one is far from over, but let’s hope the Cards can hold off Pope and find a way to land Alston.
