Louisville basketball fans are keeping a close eye on the 2027 recruiting class, and one target continues to stand out from the rest. The Cardinals are trending with 5-star point guard Reese Alston, as On3 Sports' Jamie Shaw sees Louisville as the frontrunner and continues to predict that Louisville will land the elite 2027 5-star point guard.

Earlier this week, Shaw said he has a “Medium” level of confidence in his prediction that Louisville will land Alston, giving Cardinals fans something to be excited about in this 2027 recruiting class. The Cardinals already have a 4-star commitment in Louisville native Ferlandes Wright, and now the Cardinals fans are dreaming of pairing the two together.

However, Louisville fans know not to jump to conclusions until the official announcement, as things can change quickly in recruiting. So, as Louisville fans get more and more excited about Alston, let’s break down the Cardinals' three biggest threats to land the elite 5-star prospect.

Louisville basketball's biggest threats to land 5-star Reese Alston

Alston is one of the top recruits in the 2027 recruiting class, which means top programs across the country are recruiting him. He has earned over 36 offers, according to 247Sports, including from major programs such as Purdue, Florida State, Houston, Illinois, Kansas, Texas, and USC.

However, none of those teams are the Cardinals' biggest threats for Alston. Right now, the Cardinals need to keep a close eye on four teams in the race for Alston, but three really stand out. Currently, Wichita State has the highest chance to land Alston in Rivals' Team Predictions, but that seems outdated, and with recent pushes from bigger schools, Cardinals fans might want to keep an eye on the other three schools.

In our opinion, the Cardinals' biggest threats to land Alston are LSU, Tennessee, and Louisville’s biggest rival, the Kentucky Wildcats. Will Wade moved from North Carolina State to LSU, and he is now trying to make an immediate splash with Alston, as the Tigers have been in the mix for a long time with the Cardinals.

As for Kentucky, it was reported in late July that Kentucky joined the race for Alston. Kentucky has already landed 5-star Ryan Hampton, who is a top-15 overall recruit in the class of 2027, and now Mark Pope and company are trying to pair the two 5-stars together.

Then there is Tennessee. Shaw recently reported in his latest prediction that the Volunteers are the latest team to enter the race and to make a push for Alston. Tennessee has won recruiting battles over Louisville in the past, like when they secured Nate Ament in 2025, and now the two teams are going head-to-head again.

Alston ranks as high as No. 6 overall and No. 3 among point guards. The 6-foot-3 point guard averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game, and went on to make the MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team.
