Louisville basketball is making a major push for one of the top point guards in the 2027 recruiting class, Reese Alston. Pat Kelsey loves his guards at Louisville, as he continues to try to go for the home run splash at the point guard position in high school recruiting.

He landed the No. 1 point guard in the 2025 recruiting class, Mikel Brown Jr., went after 5-star Taylen Kinney in the 2026 recruiting class, and now, in the 2027 recruiting class, he is taking a massive swing at Alston. The 5-star point guard is one of the top players in the 2027 recruiting class, and Kelsey has made it clear that Alston is at the top of his 2027 recruiting class big board.

On3 Sports' Jamie Shaw gave an update on Alston’s recruiting process and confirmed Louisville is a team to monitor, but he also mentioned something huge for Cardinals fans.

Louisville basketball gets an eye-popping update with Reese Alston

Puma hosted some of the top high school recruits this past week at the Puma NXTPro 16 event. At this event, Reese Alston was one of the biggest stars in Richmond, and the Cardinals' head coach got the front row to watch the 5-star in multiple games.

Kelsey made it clear this past week his interest in Alston and Shaw confirmed in his latest article Louisville is a team worth monitoring. He stated the three teams who continued to show up for Alston’s games and the three teams who is making a push at the moment for the 5-star point guard is Louisville, LSU and Wichita State.

Now, the thing Louisville fans need to monitor is the possibility of Alston reclassing to the 2026 recruiting class. The 5-star point guard has an October birthday and was born in 2008, which means if he wanted to he would be eligbile for the 2027 NBA Draft.

Now, Louisville has former 5-star recruit and Oregon transfer Jackson Shelstad and former NBA G-League point guard London Johnson. So, it hasn’t been reported if Louisville is recruiting him to reclass, but if Alston does reclass to the 2026 recruiting class it would make it very interesting for Kelsey and Louisville.

It would certainly give Kelsey the depth for his backcourt if he landed the 5-star and Alston reclassed, but it would also make sense if Kelsey was pitching Alston to stay in the 2027 class and play alongside former 2027 5-star recruit and the former No. 1 recruit in the class Obinna Ekezie Jr.

As many Cardinals fans know Ekezie reclassified to the 2026 recruiting class earlier this year. And so if Louisville was to land Alston and he stayed in the 2027 cycle, the Cardinals 2027 roster would have a dominant duo in Ekezie and Alston, along with top 100 recruit and 4-star Louisville native Ferlandes Wright.

Alston's recruiting battle is heating up in the middle of July, and Louisville is right in the middle of it. The Cardinals fans should have a close eye on this elite 5-star as he ranks No. 6 overall and No. 2 among point guards.
