Louisville basketball is making a strong push in the 2027 recruiting class at the moment. The summer months are always the major recruiting period for college sports, as coaches have the most free time to travel, recruit, and watch elite prospects, and Kelsey is taking full advantage of it right now.
Pat Kelsey has had a busy few months with the Transfer Portal and now the high school recruiting months, as Kelsey traveled to Richmond for the Puma NXTPro 16 event. This summer, there are many eye-popping recruits playing in Richmond at the moment, but Kelsey has sent a loud message on who he has his eye on.
The Cardinals already landed three 2027 recruits, and two of them reclassified to the 2026 recruiting class, including 5-star and No. 1 overall recruit, Obinna Ekezie Jr. And since the Cards landed Ekezie, it is clear 5-star point guard Reese Alston is at the top of Pat Kelsey's recruiting big board.
Reese Alston continues to impress Louisville and Pat Kelsey
The Cardinals continue to make a strong push for elite point guard and 5-star recruit, Reese Alston. Kelsey has attended multiple games of Alston’s, including Sunday morning, where Louisville’s head coach was one of the first in the stands to leave a notable impression on the 5-star.

Kelsey and Louisville’s coaching staff have made it crystal clear they want Alston, and they want him badly. The 5-star point guard has been at the top of their big board in the 2027 recruiting class for a long time, as the Cardinals were one of the first programs to extend an offer to the Houston native.
Right now, Alston ranks as high as No. 6 overall, No. 2 among point guards, and No. 1 among Texas recruits in the 2027 recruiting class. The 6-foot-3 point guard has earned over an impressive 35 offers, including from major programs like Kentucky, Houston, Wichita State, Purdue, LSU, Kansas, Tennessee, and others.
Of the 35 programs that have extended offers, Louisville, Kentucky, Houston, Wichita State, Purdue, and LSU are trending in the right direction, with 247Sports listing “warm” next to each program. As for On3 Sports, their recruiting predictor gives Wichita State the best chance of landing the 5-star at 29.8 percent, followed by Louisville at 20.4 percent
Alston visited Louisville back in December, and Kelsey continues to stay in contact with the 5-star. Now that the contact period is open, Kelsey is making it clear that Alston is at the top of his list in the 2027 recruiting cycle.
Kelsey is known for recruiting elite guards and believes Louisville is the top guard program in the nation, calling it ‘PGU’. Now, the Cardinals are trying to get their next 5-star point guard. Alston is coming off a dominant season, averaging 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game, earning a spot on the MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team and earning honorable mention on their overall All-American teams.
Kelsey is putting in the work this offseason for the 2027 recruiting class, and it is clear the Cards' head coach is looking to gain some momentum with one of the best players in the nation.
