Louisville basketball got a huge update a few days ago when Obinna Ekezie Jr. committed to the Cardinals on May 3. The 2027 5-star ranked as high as No. 2 overall in the cycle and No. 1 among centers. He then announced he will reclass to the 2026 class and will be part of this upcoming season.
He received updated ratings for the 2026 recruiting class, ranking No. 14 overall and No. 1 among centers. The 7-foot, 215-pound center is an elite rim protector who averaged 1.8 blocks per game last season, along with over 17 points per game. Kelsey is having a dominant offseason and making a strong case that this Cardinals team is a legit Final Four contender.

Louisville football takes huge hit in way-too-early-rankings
Louisville football had a huge offseason, as On3 Sports ranked its Transfer Portal class No. 4 nationally. Jeff Brohm had a monster offseason, landing key players like Tre Richardson, Lawayne McCoy, Brody Foley, and others, but also had a huge offseason by recruiting from within and avoiding nightmare scenarios, as Isaac Brown, Antonio Watts, AJ Green, and TJ Capers all returned.
Louisville was initially ranked No. 14 by ESPN in their way-too-early rankings, and it seemed like the Cards were finally getting the love and respect they deserved. However, they posted a spring update of their rankings, and the Cardinals dropped seven spots to now rank No. 21 in their way-too-early rankings.

Louisville basketball's obvious No. 1 target in 2027 recruiting class
With Louisville basketball recently landing 5-star Obinna Ekezie Jr., and he reclassing to the 2026 class, Pat Kelsey needs a new No. 1 target in the 2027 class. When looking at Louisville’s target list, one name stands out from the rest, and that is the unanimous 5-star point guard Reese Alston.
The elite guard averaged 22.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.7 steals per game last season and has earned over 32 offers. 247 Sports has Louisville as one of the teams with ‘warm’ next to its name, as the Cardinals earned an official visit in December and, in April, conducted an in-house visit to the 5-star. Alston ranks as high as No. 4 in the 2027 recruiting class and No. 1 among point guards.
