Pat Kelsey and Louisville basketball are in the mix for multiple 2027 recruits right now. The Cardinals are trying to make an early push for top prospects, including the No. 2 overall prospect, Obinna Ekezie Jr. Earlier in the week, Louisville received a Crystal Ball prediction to land the 5-star center, but since then, there is one school emerging as a major threat.
The Cardinals made Ekezie’s final five earlier this week after earning an official visit, putting the Cardinals in a recruiting battle with Kentucky, Arkansas, Maryland, and BYU. And while Louisville is trending as the frontrunner, Maryland is making a strong push for the 5-star, and this recruitment is far from over. The Cardinals and the Terrapins are now in a battle for the center, as his dad played for Maryland.

Tyran Stokes commits to Kansas over Kentucky
One of Louisville’s early targets in the 2026 recruiting class was the Louisville native and the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2026 cycle, Tyran Stokes. The Cardinals were heavily involved in Stokes' recruiting process, making his final five and going up against Kansas, Kentucky, USC, and Oregon. However, Louisville didn’t make his final three, and recently, he ultimately committed to Kansas, making it appear to be another Mark Pope whiff.
Louisville is dominating the 2026 portal class, landing the No. 1 overall transfer in Flory Bidunga and having the top class in the nation. While Pope appears to have landed four commitments in the portal so far, ranking No. 13 in the nation. Louisville knew they were a long shot, while it seemed like Kentucky thought they had a legit shot at landing Stokes, and this could be a reason they missed out on Robert Wright III, Donnie Freeman, and other targets

Louisville basketball's 5-star PG Reese Alston update
Pat Kelsey and the Louisville Cardinals are not just making a big push for Ekezie; they are also making a strong push for 5-star point guard and top-10 recruit Reese Alston. It was reported earlier this week by 247Sports that the Cardinals conducted an in-home visit with Alston. The 5-star point guard has taken three visits so far, with Louisville earning a visit this past December, and now Kelsey is making a trip out to Alston in late April.
Kelsey is looking to stay red-hot in recruiting, having dominated the portal, and is now trying to dominate the 2027 recruiting class. Alston ranks No. 8 overall in the 2027 recruiting class and as high as No. 3 among point guards in the 2027 cycle. He has received over 32 offers so far, including from major programs such as Kentucky, Purdue, Houston, Texas, and Kansas.
