While the Cardinals' season is set to begin on Wednesday with their thrilling exhibition match against Kansas, Louisville and Pat Kelsey still don’t know who is eligible. However, they just got a favorable ruling that Louisville fans will absolutely love.

Louisville basketball gets first Seth Trimble update after eligibility setback

The Cardinals fans are keeping a close eye on the Wells vs. NCAA case, as UofL has two players fighting for eligibility, including UNC transfer Seth Trimble and NKU transfer LJ Wells. Earlier this month, the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled these two Cardinals, along with many others, ineligible.

However, after yesterday's hearing, Judge Brian Edwards with the Jefferson County Circuit Court granted Wells and Trimble eligibility.

Louisville's two fifth-years are eligible as of now

The two Cardinals are now eligible, but this case isn’t over, and we don’t know when it will be. But the good news is that these two Cardinals are trending toward eligibility this upcoming season, according to On3 Sports and multiple sources.

Earlier this week, Kelsey went viral when he showed up in court and was questioned. Kelsey called out the NCAA, telling them to “end the chaos” and to show him the rules.

“Look, you are trying to turn questions. Tell me the rules, and I’ll follow them. Tell me the rules, and I’ll follow them,” Kelsey stated passionately. “Nobody follows them. And then every time something happens, a lawsuit happens, so nobody knows. And you’re saying well, did you know this rule here, and who made it? You are trying to trick me with a bunch of stuff. End the chaos. End the chaos.”

Louisville built one of the most talented rosters in college basketball before Trimble committed to UofL, and if he is eligible, the Cardinals go from a top-15 team to a legit Final Four contender. Trimble is a physical guard who can be the lockdown defender Louisville desperately missed last year.

Trimble is coming off his best year at UNC, averaging 14.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 47 percent from the field. If he is eligible, the UNC star would be the Cardinals' starting shooting guard, and while it would be a huge boost if he could play, the Cardinals have a former 5-star transfer, Adrian Wooley, poised for a big leap.

The Cardinals knew it would be chaos when they got involved with the “five-for-five” rule; now, after yesterday’s ruling, hopefully this is a step in the right direction, and all of this madness can end sooner rather than later, so Trimble and Wells can suit up for Louisville’s 2026-27 season.
