Louisville basketball is pursuing the top transfer, Milan Momcilovic, but the Cardinals have an uphill battle for the 5-star, as they face their in-state rival, the Kentucky Wildcats. Louisville and Kentucky are considered the leaders in the race for Momcilovic, but Mark Pope and Kentucky are the slight favorites as of now.

3 Biggest threats for Louisville basketball to land elite 5-star transfer Milan Momcilovic

Louisville is looking to add Momcilovic and become a legitimate National Title threat, while Kentucky hasn’t had the offseason or 2026 recruiting class that Pope or the fans had hoped for. However, a player like Momcilovic is exactly who Pope needs to land to keep his job, but Pat Kelsey and Louisville won’t make it easy for him.

Louisville has a chance not only to move itself into the National Title hunt if it adds Momcilovic, but also to out-recruit Pope and Kentucky. Jeff Goodman believes that could cost Pope his job after this upcoming season.

“Milan is ultimately the guy that changes, and honestly, he might be the guy that ultimately decides whether or not Mark Pope is the coach in Lexington in two, three, four, five years,” stated Goodman. “If he gets him, Mark Pope could be the coach at Kentucky for a while. If he doesn’t, we could have a new head coach in Lexington, Kentucky, in a year from now.”

The Cardinals have a huge opportunity right now to make this roster one of the best in the nation. And if Kelsey finds a way to land Momcilovic and embarrass Kentucky by another Pope whiff, then Louisville fans would love it even more.

Pope hasn’t had the recruiting success many thought he would at Kentucky, and he certainly hasn’t had the on-court success as many had hoped for. Kentucky was reportedly emerging as the favorite for the No. 1 overall recruit Tyran Stokes, but he committed to Kansas, and now they are expecting to make a big offer for Momcilovic.

However, Louisville isn’t going down easily. Joe Tipton reported he isn’t writing off the Cardinals just yet, and if Momcilovic wants to win a National Title or compete for one, Louisville is the clear better option right now.

Louisville and Kentucky are among the best college basketball rivalries in the sport, and Goodman is making it clear that if Louisville outrecruits Kentucky and the Cardinals land Momcilovic, Kentucky might need to find a new head coach this time next year.
