Game day is almost here, Louisville football fans. The Cardinals are just a few days away from the highly anticipated 2026 season, with Jeff Brohm leading a team emerging as a real threat in the ACC and a dark horse for the College Football Playoffs.
The Cardinals have a pretty favorable schedule this year in the ACC, as they don’t have to play Miami, Clemson, or Virginia. However, they still have some games everyone has circled, and they're no cupcake games.
Out of all 12 regular-season games this season, three games really stand out on this UofL 2026 schedule. These three games will be crucial to the Cardinals' ACC Title and CFP hopes and dreams, as they will be major resume boosts if they can win, but they also have a realistic chance of losing all three.
3. Pitt Panthers
This one was a toss-up between a few games, but we ultimately landed on the Pitt Panthers. Last year,, Louisville made an epic comeback after trailing 17-0 and won over Pitt 34-27. Now the two will face off for the fifth straight season, and this year it will be at L&N Stadium.
Pitt returns their starting quarterback from last year, Mason Heintschel, who threw for 2,354 yards and 16 touchdowns, including 20-for-27 and 226 yards and three total touchdowns in Pitt’s win over No. 16 Georgia Tech last year. They also return key running back Ja'Kyrian Turner, who rushed for 745 yards this past season, including 201 yards against Georgia Tech.
This Pitt team has a chance to play spoiler for the Cardinals late in the season, as they will face each other in the second-to-last week on Nov. 21. The Cardinals lost a couple of close games in November last year, and this Pitt is one Brohm and Louisville can’t overlook.
2. SMU Mustangs
Louisville hasn’t had the best of luck against SMU since the Mustangs joined the ACC. The Cardinals are 0-2 against SMU in the past two seasons, including last year, when Louisville got embarrassed and lost 38-6.
Now, UofL and Brohm will look for revenge and the program's first win over SMU. These two play each other very early in Week 3, which is a game that will definitley have ACC Title implications. The Mustangs return their star quarterback, Kevin Jennings, who has won 18 games over the past two seasons, including taking SMU to the CFP.
The Mustangs are currently ranked No. 19 in the nation, and with both teams eyeing that ACC Title and a CFP berth, this is a game every Louisville fan has circled.
1. Ole Miss Rebels
There is no question that the Cardinals' hardest schedule this year is their season opener against the Ole Miss Rebels. Despite Ole Miss losing Lane Kiffin, the program is coming off its best season in program history, when it won a historic 13 games and made the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Ole Miss has two preseason All-Americans in Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy. The Rebels' offense is expected to be one of the top offenses in the country behind these two elite playmakers, and on the defensive side, they return some key returners as well, like Will Echoles and Suntarine Perkins, who combined for 149 tackles and 9.5 sacks last year.
Louisville has a chance to send a statement to the rest of the week this Sunday, but this is without a doubt the Cardinals' most difficult game in 2026.
