Louisville may want to hold off on giving Jeff Brohm a contract extension

Louisville was reportedly working on an extension for Jeff Brohm, but those efforts may stall amid his team's three-game losing streak.

Following Louisville’s upset win over Miami in Week 8, head coach Jeff Brohm became a scorching hot candidate for the vacancies at Penn State, Florida, and others. With other highly sought-after candidates like Curt Cignetti, Matt Rhule, and Mike Elko signing extensions midseason, Brohm’s name presumably shot to the top of multiple coaching searches, and Louisville started working on a new deal to keep its former quarterback at his alma mater.

However, the tide has changed in the last three weeks. Louisville has fallen out of the ACC Title race, and after Saturday, has lost three straight games, falling to Cal, Clemson, and SMU. In Week 13, Brohm kept transfer quarterback Miller Moss on the sidelines, gave Deuce Adams his first career start, and dropped to 7-4 with a 38-6 loss.

Brohm’s name may still be circulating for Penn State, which has whiffed on Cignetti, Rhule, and Elko, and whichever of LSU or Florida misses out on Lane Kiffin could set its sights on Brohm. An extension would keep those programs at bay; not signing to him could leave Louisville vulnerable, but after this losing skid, that might be a risk worth taking.

Louisville may slow its efforts to sign Jeff Brohm to a contract extension

When Brohm returned to Louisville, leaving Purdue in 2022, he signed a six-year contract with a base salary of roughly $5.9 million. His contract has since been extended to 2030, at the same rate, based on the performance incentives written into the deal.

Brohm is far from the highest-paid head coach in college football, so a pricey extension wouldn’t necessarily bankrupt the program, but if Louisville can keep its powder dry to spend that money on Brohm’s roster through revenue-sharing and NIL payments, that would be the best-case scenario.

Brohm is a proven winner, and through his first three years at Louisville, he has had modest success, making the ACC Championship Game in 2023. However, his reliance on the transfer portal introduces a level of volatility that could have the program weary. Florida State rewarded Mike Norvell with a major extension following his 2023 ACC Title season with a portal-heavy roster, and it is regretting it in a big way. Louisville does not want to end up in that situation.

Brohm has gone into the transfer portal for his quarterback in each of his three seasons at Louisville, first bringing Jack Plummer with him from Purdue, then adding Tyler Shough for 2024. This season, Brohm added Miller Moss, who left USC after he was benched by Lincoln Riley. That has proven to be a mistake.

Moss has struggled in his second opportunity as a starter, leading to what appears to be a benching in Week 13. Moss is reportedly dealing with an injury, but he was dressed on Saturday and available to play as Adams and Brady Allen traded snaps behind center.

Brohm is a good head coach, one of the best offensive play-callers in the country, and a proven giant-killer. However, he’s far from perfect, so Louisville may not want to rush into a long-term deal with an expensive buyout if it does not have to.
