Louisville football entered the season with high expectations after Jeff Brohm got his contract extension and the NIL money he wanted for a roster. The Cardinals landed a top-five Transfer Portal class, including one of the nation’s top preseason running backs, Isaac Brown.
Louisville’s 4-star commit is on major flip watch after latest Ja'Hyde Brown update
Louisville was dreaming of not just a berth in the ACC Championship game, but a berth in the College Football Playoffs. But that's not how the season has gone.
The Cardinals dropped their third game of the season in another three-point loss. This time, Louisville fell to North Carolina State in what feels like the nail in the coffin for Louisville’s ACC Title dreams.
Louisville's loss to NC State crushes their ACC Title dreams
Entering Week 4, the talk in the ACC was that Louisville looked not only like the clear biggest threat to Miami, but also like a challenger. Louisville played Ole Miss to the final second of the game, then upset SMU at home 41-31, and were trending as the clear No. 2 team in the ACC.
However, the Cardinals just dropped two straight, and they were favored in both. Louisville fell to North Carolina State 31-28 after the Cardinals fumbled the ball five times, including three that led to turnovers. And on the defensive side, they just haven’t been able to find its rhythm and click like it did last year.
Now, Louisville’s ACC Title odds have dropped significantly, with the Cardinals at +2500 to make the Championship Game and +8000 to win it.
The 'Cardinals' season hasn't gone the way many Cards fans thought it would. Louisville showed so much potential against Ole Miss and SMU, but in these last couple of weeks, they haven't played disciplined football and have kept losing on the small things.
The reality is, at 2-3 on the year and 1-2 in conference play, the Cardinals' ACC Title dreams are likely shattered. It would take nearly a miracle for Louisville to make the Championship Game, and it would likely mean Louisville has to win out, including games against 5-0 Pitt and No. 24 Kentucky.
Brohm and the coaching staff have to head back to the drawing board and fix these mistakes immediately. The Cardinals fans are losing patience with these losses, and reasonably so. Every year, Cardinals fans experience the highest highs, but right after that big-time win, Louisville hits rock bottom.
Louisville will now turn its attention to Florida State this Friday night, October 9. Louisville opens as the slight favorite, with ESPN Analytics giving the Cardinals a 68 percent chance of winning. Brohm needs this one bad, as if Louisville falls to 2-4, things might get ugly for the head coach.
