Louisville football has a legitimate chance to make a College Football Playoff run this season, largely because of its favorable path. The Cardinals have a challenging first few weeks, opening the season against No. 9 Ole Miss and, in Week 3, hosting No. 19 SMU, but after that, Louisville has a favorable schedule, and it is showing through the first couple of weeks.
Louisville's schedule looks even better
Jeff Brohm made some major moves this offseason, and this roster is loaded with talent. The Cardinals had a top-five transfer portal class and are trending as a major threat in the ACC; while the roster is a huge reason why, the schedule is also a key factor.
The Cardinals' schedule continues to look better and better for Brohm and UofL. Louisville doesn’t have to play Miami, Virginia, and Clemson, and after Week 0 and a few Week 1 games, the Cardinals fans should feel even better about their path to the ACC Championship game.
In Week 0, the Cardinals saw Virginia look like a legit team against North Carolina State, as the Cavaliers dominated the Wolfpack 34-8. Not only did this dominant win from Virginia make the Cardinals fans happier about them avoiding the Cavaliers, but it also gave them more confidence about Louisville’s chances against NC State when the Cardinals travel to Raleigh in Week 5.
The Cardinals' road game against North Carolina State is a game many fans circled in the offseason as a toss-up game. However, after the Wolfpack's very underwhelming performance in Week 0, the Cardinals should suddenly feel much better about this matchup.
Moving on to Thursday, Colorado defeated Georgia Tech 14-13, which once again should give Louisville more confidence for their road game against the Yellow Jackets. Entering the year, the Buffaloes were picked to finish last in the Big 12 and had a season win total of 4.5, and with Colorado pulling the win over Georgia Tech, the Cards should feel way better about this game.
Louisville travels to Georgia Tech on Nov. 7, so the Yellow Jackets have plenty of time to make changes and adjustments, but a loss to Colorado gives Louisville plenty of confidence for this road game in November. Outside of Louisville's matchup with SMU, the Georgia Tech and North Carolina State games were two that many fans circled, but with both teams already losing, the Cardinals' path to Charlotte looks even better.
The Cardinals' schedule continues to look more and more favorable, as they are playing five of the bottom seven teams, which had a combined 12-28 conference record last season and a 298-point deficit. Louisville’s path to Charlotte is looking better by the week, and now it comes down to whether the Cardinals can take advantage of it.
