While this season has not gone exactly how Cardinals fans would have hoped, Louisville has settled back in at the midway point of the season and won its last two games. After disappointing losses to Wake Forest and NC State, most fans had written off any chance of success for the 2026 team. However, after winning two games in a row, fans may be reassessing this team’s potential.
Louisville needs major help to reach the ACC Championship Game after this weekend
Looking at the rest of their ACC schedule, Card fans are probably curious about what a path to the ACC Championship game might look like for Louisville, or if it is even possible. What once may have felt like a sure thing after beating SMU in Week 3 now feels more like a pipe dream. Looking ahead, many fans probably see Louisville finishing 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the ACC after its game against Georgia Tech on November 7.
If that is the case, the Cardinals’ final two ACC games, at UNC and at home against Pitt, would be more difficult to win, but they could also be key matchups in the conference standings. Winning out would not be enough to guarantee Louisville a spot in the ACC Championship game, as the Cardinals would need some help, but it would be a good start.
Here is Louisville’s path to the ACC Championship game as we head into the bye week.
1. Where Louisville Stands in the ACC
The current ACC standings have Miami sitting undefeated at 4-0 in conference play. The Hurricanes will be favored in all their remaining ACC games, despite having some tough matchups against Pitt, UNC, and Virginia Tech. Wake Forest, SMU, Clemson, and UNC are next in the standings, each with just one conference loss. Louisville sits in a group of nine teams with two ACC losses.
Rather than go through every team and its path to the championship game, the focus here will be on Louisville’s chances. Many of the teams ahead of and behind the Cardinals will play each other down the stretch, meaning common opponents and additional losses could help sort out the standings. For example, although UNC has just one loss so far, it still has to play Miami, where it would be a significant underdog, as well as Louisville. Operating under the assumption that the Cardinals win out, UNC would likely finish with three conference losses and fall out of the equation.
Clemson is a little more complicated because it does not have many difficult games remaining on its ACC schedule. However, games at Florida State and Duke could both present opportunities for another loss. Either way, Louisville would need Clemson to lose at least one more game, preferably two, to have a better chance of jumping the Tigers in the standings.
2. Louisville Needs Help From Wake Forest
The simplest way to explain Louisville’s path is this: if the Cardinals win out and finish 7-2 in ACC play, while the results of the remaining conference games go as Vegas would predict, Louisville would finish in third place, tied with SMU. The Cardinals would own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mustangs after their Week 3 win, but Miami and Wake Forest would still finish ahead of them in the standings.
That brings us to the part where Louisville does not control its own destiny. The Cardinals would need Wake Forest to lose two more games, including at least one in which the Demon Deacons would be favored, to finish with three ACC losses. Wake Forest currently holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Louisville, making it especially important for the Demon Deacons to stumble down the stretch.
Wake Forest still has a game at SMU on November 14. That top-25 matchup could be a season-deciding game for Louisville, and Cardinals fans will need to become huge Mustang supporters that week to improve their team's chances.
If Wake Forest's only remaining conference loss comes against SMU, Louisville, SMU, and Wake Forest could finish in a three-way tie with two ACC losses apiece. In that scenario, the tiebreaker would come down to the Team Success Ranking provided by SportSource Analytics. This new rule was put in place in July after last season's five-way tie for second place went to a fifth tiebreaker, conference opponent winning percentage, and resulted in Duke playing for the ACC title instead of Miami.
3. The Team Success Ranking Could Decide Louisville’s Fate
In a scenario where Louisville, SMU, and Wake Forest all finish with two ACC losses, the Team Success Ranking would determine which team advances. One would have to think that Wake Forest's losses to a ranked SMU team and Miami could look better on paper than Louisville's losses to NC State and Wake Forest.
SMU also has a chance to bolster its resume by beating Notre Dame. While that result would not affect the ACC standings, it could help the Mustangs' standing in the Team Success Ranking compared with Louisville and Wake Forest, depending on the criteria used.
Ultimately, Louisville's best-case scenario is for Wake Forest to lose another game it should win, in addition to losing to SMU. That would make the tiebreaker much simpler. Louisville's head-to-head win over SMU would give the Cardinals the advantage over the Mustangs and put them in a strong position to reach Charlotte on December 5.
Anything short of winning out, or a scenario in which Wake Forest takes care of business, could leave Louisville on the outside looking in. Those two disappointing early-season losses would continue to haunt Cardinals fans well into 2027.
